    Job description:

In this varied and challenging role, we will look for you to lead a team of remote working Vehicle Standards Assessors (VSAs) to deliver high quality, value for money testing services within an Authorised Testing Facility network.

You will support the provision of testing services by undertaking quality control activities of DVSA staff and assessing the technical aspects of testing facilities.


You will be responsible for ensuring the team works flexibly to meet the needs of the customer base, assessing the condition of a variety of classes of vehicles against the statutory standards on behalf of the Secretary of State for Transport.


Responsibilities including, but are not limited to:

  • Developing and maintaining an engaged, cohesive team culture, being visible to the team and taking account of how mobile / remote working affects individuals, through regular 121 & team briefings.
  • Maintaining & improving the performance of the wider team; recognising and rewarding good/outstanding performers and tackling performance issues promptly.
  • Acting as a technical expert providing advice and clarification for DVSA colleagues to support accurate decision making throughout the network as part of the technical support network.
  • Educating and guiding all clients and customers to access relevant information or support that will help them understand and use DVSA services more effectively.
  • Suspending tests at sites if there are issues with Health and Safety/equipment.
  • Effective relationships management with local testing facilities, in collaboration with other members of the NGT Management Team Resolve day to day service issues escalated by VSAs, Testing Network Manager, Network Business Manager and the resourcing team.
  • Acting as a first point of contact for testing facility providers on tests, offering front line advice for queries and complaints, ensuring a high standard of service delivery.

Person specification:

We will need you to bring your expert knowledge of vehicle testing; the scheme and processes that are involved.


You will need to be an excellent communicator, making sure that when explaining technical information it is in a way that individuals understand.


We will look to you to be motivated and proactive, be able to drive forward our values and look to the future to see the bigger picture.

You will be confident, able to handle challenging conversations and speak up when needed.


You will use your experience of leading a team to drive forward performance across the team, building and maintaining a positive working environment.


Additional Information


You will need to be open to working remotely within a wide geographical area, spending occasional nights away from home, if necessary, on DVSA business.

You'll work flexibly when needed in line with the relevant operating modules and contract.
