Job Summary

The Clinical Pharmacy Service at King's is distinguished across the Trust, and our team collaborates closely with multi-disciplinary groups to enhance patient care. We are patient-focused, research-driven, forward-thinking, and creative, working alongside senior managers and clinicians to deliver comprehensive directorate services.

The ideal candidate will be part of the Pharmacy Clinical Services team, leading the Clinical Pharmacy Service by overseeing recruitment, workforce management, addressing medicine shortages, and developing and auditing clinical standards against approved policies and procedures.

Main Duties of the Job
  • Respond to inquiries from the Clinical Pharmacy teams and wider multi-disciplinary teams
  • Provide training to pharmacy staff on approved policies and procedures
  • Engage in recruitment and broader workforce planning
  • Manage rotas for the Clinical Pharmacy Service
  • Support the on-call service by offering clinical support, training, and guidance
  • Participate in clinical audit and research, risk management, and clinical guideline development
  • Create clinical and operational plans for managing medicine shortages for the trust
  • Act as the Deputy for the Principal Pharmacist, Clinical Services

Candidates should have completed the Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy Practice (or equivalent). An independent prescribing qualification and staff management experience are advantageous.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Leadership - To act as the Deputy for the Principal Pharmacist for Clinical Services when necessary. To lead clinical pharmacy services for patients treated within the Care Group in collaboration with the Principal Pharmacist. To suggest and implement policies and procedures to enhance the pharmacy service to patients in the Trust with guidance from the Principal Pharmacist, aligning with national and international consensus guidelines. To lead discussions on policy and service changes within the clinical pharmacy service and contribute to pharmacy service advancements in accordance with departmental and Trust policies. To devise, implement, monitor, and assess evidence-based prescribing guidelines and protocols for Trust-wide and Acute Speciality Medicine use. To ensure that services offered comply with local and national policies, guidelines, and frameworks. To contribute to and uphold clinical pharmacy service standards.

Clinical Responsibilities - To serve as a specialist practitioner and expert pharmacist within the Care Group. To advocate and provide pharmaceutical care for Care Group patients and more broadly for all patients. To offer specialized and intricate evidence-based clinical advice and information using expert knowledge to pharmacy, nursing, medical, and other healthcare professionals on patient care both within and outside the Trust. To actively engage in the clinical/ward pharmacy service. To participate in consultant ward rounds when appropriate. To join outpatient clinics and aid in advancing the pharmacist's role in this domain. To conduct patient medication review sessions and patient assessments in outpatient clinics as required.

Financial Management - To assist the Principal Pharmacist in overseeing drug expenditure within the Care Group and present precise expenditure data, along with thorough analysis, to the Clinical Director and General Manager. To pinpoint areas for potential cost savings within the Care Group and establish systems to realize savings and control prescribing costs. By utilizing horizon scanning techniques, to identify upcoming high-cost medications. To support the formulation and implementation of policies for controlling drug expenditure and ensuring cost-effective prescribing.

Person Specification

Education and Qualifications

Essential

  • MPharm (Masters Degree)
  • Registered Pharmacist (1 year competency assessed and examined professional registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council)
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Pharmacy Practice or equivalent qualification / experience
  • Registered Independent prescriber or willingness to complete

Desirable

  • Member of the RPS faculty

Knowledge and Experience

Essential

  • Specialist clinical knowledge and skills relevant to area of practice
  • Demonstrates awareness and commitment to the clinical governance agenda
  • Understanding of regulations and legislation pertinent to area of practice
  • Experience collaborating with senior healthcare professionals outside of Pharmacy

Desirable

  • Demonstration of advanced practice using evidence mapped to the RPS Advanced Practice Framework

Skills and Competencies

Essential

  • Capable of providing highly complex information on medicine use, clinical pharmacy, and financial matters to all healthcare professional levels (up to and including senior consultants/professor level)
  • Adept at analyzing and interpreting complex clinical information with a range of facts requiring evaluation and comparison of options
  • Basic proficiency in keyboard and computer skills (word processing, spreadsheet, report generation, and presentations)
  • Ability to perform effectively under pressure by prioritizing tasks and managing time efficiently
