Project Officer (Farm Liaison) - Position in Arlington, Barnstaple

Overview

If you're passionate about making a positive impact on nature, climate, and society, we're seeking an innovative and dynamic Farm Liaison Officer to assist with a DEFRA-funded Landscape Recovery Scheme in North Devon. This project, spanning 1300ha, aims to establish a nature-rich and climate-resilient corridor between the Arlington Estate and Exmoor, fostering a conducive environment for business growth. As a key team member during the two-year Development Phase, your role will involve promoting collaboration among land managers to enhance landscape connectivity and ensure the project's sustainability over the next two decades.

Working in partnership with the Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group SouthWest (FWAG SouthWest), you will benefit from their expertise and support.

What to Expect

Reporting to an FWAG SouthWest Farm Environment Adviser, you will collaborate with a skilled team dedicated to driving significant change in the agricultural sector. By combining knowledge of farming systems, land management, habitat creation, and species conservation, you will play a vital role in translating government policies, environmental incentives, and regulations into practical solutions for farmers and land managers.

As an essential member of the diverse project team at National Trust, you will work closely with specialists in project management, conservation, surveying, monitoring, community engagement, and site access to ensure the successful implementation of the Landscape Recovery Scheme.

This role offers a blend of office and fieldwork, allowing for farm visits and interactions with the project team at Arlington. Occasional after-hours work may be necessary, with compensatory time-off provided.

Responsibilities

As the Project Officer, you will engage in environmental liaison with land managers, farmers, and tenants to develop farm plans, facilitate group events, and enhance the corridor's continuity through effective networking.

Working in coordination with the Area Ranger, you will support baseline surveys, prepare reports, and maintain regular communication with the National Trust project team.

You will establish relationships with land managers, guiding them on adopting agroecological and regenerative practices, promoting habitat restoration, tree planting, soil improvement, species diversity, and carbon emission reduction. Additionally, you will facilitate their participation in agri-environment schemes, green finance initiatives, fundraising activities, and carbon footprint assessments.

Qualifications

Applicants will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

•Practical experience in diverse farming and land management systems, along with knowledge of agri-environment grant schemes.
•Ability to assist land managers in habitat creation, management, and conservation.
•Strong interpersonal skills, diplomacy, and collaboration capabilities with internal and external stakeholders.
•Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, particularly within the farming community.
•Proficiency in producing clear reports, presentations, and mapping.
•Self-motivated, capable of independent work while collaborating with peers and seeking guidance when necessary.

Please be aware that this role requires a valid UK driving license and access to a vehicle.
