Oxford, Oxfordshire, United Kingdom OXFORD UNIVERSITY - JESUS COLLEGE Full time

We invite you to join us here at Jesus College as we continue our journey into an exciting new chapter in our history.

Jesus College presents a truly special combination of features. We are committed to the highest standards of academic excellence, but also have an informal, inclusive, vibrant and supportive community of staff, students, Fellows, and tutors. We believe that a diverse community is a stronger community, and our College members come from a wide range of backgrounds and nationalities.

This is a significant moment in the College's history. Having celebrated our 450th anniversary in 2021, reflecting on the historic milestones that have created the College we are today, we continue to look to the future: a future of innovative learning and research in the digital age; a future of increased inclusivity, diversity and equality; a future where we respect tradition but also reach out to embrace the new. We do so with enthusiasm and confidence, in the knowledge that the magnificent new Cheng Building, which opened in 2022 in the heart of Oxford, allows us to offer state of the art facilities for teaching, research, and conferences, while substantially increasing our accommodation capacity for Fellows and students at our central site.

The role

The primary purpose of the Director of Accommodation, Catering, and Conferences (DACC / sometimes referred to as the Domestic Bursar elsewhere) is to direct the provision of cost-effective services for our world-class students, staff, and Fellows, as well as conference guests and other commercial customers. A particular focus will be on leveraging our newly-built, state-of-the-art, Central Oxford event space – the Cheng Building.

The DACC provides both leadership and management of the Accommodation, Catering, and Conferences (ACC) team to deliver a reliable, high-quality service consistently throughout the year. This includes the following functions: accommodation, housekeeping, catering, conferencing and events, Lodge, and security.

As well as delivering a service for members of the College, Fellowship and alumni community, the department also has a commercial objective to generate income for the College from conferences and other external parties. The DACC must keep both internal and external stakeholders in mind when developing plans and running services. The College hosts on average 250 internal events per year for College members and alumni during term, and around 200 events outside of term for external stakeholders – including a number of large residential summer schools.

The DACC is an Official Fellow of the College, a member of its Governing Body, and a trustee of the charity. The postholder is also expected to participate fully in College life and to engage with colleagues across the collegiate University as appropriate.

The role is ideal for an ambitious individual, with the highest integrity and regard for excellence in hospitality. A key leadership role within the Jesus College community, proven experience of leading multiple departments and teams is essential for this role, as well as significant management experience at a strategic and operational level – ideally within the hospitality industry or relevant equivalent. Commercial acumen as well as strong people skills will be required to steer the team to success. A demonstrable collaborative approach and an understanding of the collegiate community dynamics would also be advantageous.

Essential skills and experience

  • Proven leadership experience, including managing and engaging multiple departments and teams.
  • Significant management experience at a strategic and operational level – ideally within the hospitality industry or relevant equivalent.
  • Commercially adept, with business acumen.
  • Experience in strategic planning and budget management.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to build and maintain positive cross-functional relationships to achieve common goals.
  • Driven to meet and deliver consistently high standards in all areas of work.
  • Capacity for managing multiple priorities and deadlines, as well as deal with immediate operational needs.
  • Strong written communication skills, and the ability to develop and present compelling business cases to committees and the Governing Body.
  • High proficiency in IT.
  • Commitment to the aims and ethos of higher education.

    Desirable skills and experience
    • Qualification in hotel, conference, or event management.
    • High-end hospitality experience.
    • Health and Safety Management qualification (e.g., IOSH).
    • Personal License Holder.
    • Knowledge of GDPR/Data Protection.

      Additional information

This role is full-time (35 hours per week) with flexibility required to meet business needs and oversee events. Due to the operational nature of the role, the postholder needs to be both visible and accessible, and will be required on-site most of the time.

The salary for the role is in the region of £85,000 per annum. Remuneration for the role will be offered depending on the skills and experience of the right candidate.

Benefits include 38 days' holiday (inclusive of Bank Holidays), a generous pension scheme, private medical insurance, Cycle to Work and Electric Vehicle salary sacrifice schemes, 24/7 access to our Employee Assistance Programme, and secure on-site bike parking.

In addition, Fellows of the College are also entitled to lunch and dinner - free of charge - with members of the Senior Common Room during term and vacation (except when the kitchens are closed), and are entitled to dine free of charge at all College feasts.

For full details of the role, visit our website: If you have any questions about the role, or require further information, please contact

Closing date: Noon on Friday 21st June.

Interviews: First stage interviews will be held via Teams on 9th July and final-stage interviews will be held in-person at Jesus College on 16th July.
