Principal Genetic Counsellor

Bristol, Bristol, United Kingdom University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust Full time

The Clinical Genetics Service is based at St Michaels Hospital and Abbot's House within the UHBW site in central Bristol, and provides for a total population of 2.46 million in Gloucestershire, Bristol, Bath, Somerset & West Wiltshire.

In addition to the service based in Bristol, there are peripheral units in Gloucester, Taunton and Bath, with Genetic Counsellors based at each unit.

The post holder will provide genetic counselling for a broad range of hereditary conditions to a wide variety of patients which can include cancer, cardiac, prenatal, fetal medicine, paediatrics, adolescents, and adult referrals.

This will include seeing patients and their families, in hospital clinics, on-wards, in GP surgeries, and occasionally on home-visits. Genetic counselling via telephone or virtual appointments will also be offered.

The Regional Results Coordinator element of the role is a newly established role which ensures that babies and their families who receive a 'suspected condition' result from the Generation Study have a smooth handover to the NHS for confirmatory testing and, if required, to the relevant care and support pathway.

The role is critical to ensure that babies are diagnosed and treated quickly by an appropriate treating clinician, which has a direct impact on these babies' clinical outcomes and in some cases survival.

Flexible working hours are required to accommodate occasional out-of-hours appointments.

In addition the post holder will act as an expert source of support for healthcare professionals working outside clinical genetics as they undertake genetic testing within their areas of specialism, in line with the agenda for mainstreaming genomic medicine.
