Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join our Medico-Legal team at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The role reports directly to our Medico-Legal Manager, who will ensure you are supported to deliver the highest standards of legal advice and advocacy for our staff, with a focus on learning and minimising any safety risks for our patients.

Main duties of the job

To deputise for the Medico-Legal Manager in their absence and assist with complex patients and the process for making applications to the Court of Protection.

To ensure the timely provision of all information required by Coroners for Inquests involving Trust patients, to provide support to staff involved in this process and to represent the Trust at Inquest hearings.

To be responsible for the effective investigation and management of clinical negligence and personal injury claims against the Trust in conjunction with NHS Resolution.

Support the Trusts governance structure alignment in learning from themes and outcomes of Inquests and non-clinical claims.

Provide detailed reports on Inquests, claims and litigation provide training and guidance on legal matters.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

Knowledge of law and legal practice, acquired through degree, post graduate diploma in legal practice (LPC) and further 2 year traineeship to masters level equivalent and additional knowledge in specialist field of NHS Law Clinical negligence, personal injury, property, employment law.

Desirable

Diploma in Claims and Risk Management. Post graduate Diploma in Law. Knowledge in specialist field of NHS Law Clinical negligence, personal injury, property, employment law.

Experience

Essential

Demonstrable experience of working within legal services within a healthcare setting. Experience of effective liaison with both clinical and non-clinical staff. Experience of clinical negligence, personal injury litigation systems and processes including the NHS Resolution Claims Management system. Managing Inquests. Dealing with highly sensitive information of an emotional and distressing nature. Patient experience and dealing with the injured/bereaved.

Desirable

Theoretical and practical knowledge and experience of working with NHS specific provisions, structures and social care policies. Advocacy at Inquests. Mediation.

Essential

Extensive knowledge of the Civil Procedure Rules.

Skills

Essential

Excellent negotiation skills. Ability to deal with complex, difficult and challenging situations. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Excellent organisation skills. To manage and prioritise a voluminous workload. Ability to work autonomously to tight deadlines. Ability to present complex information in a comprehensive manner. Additional Requirements

Essential

The ability to understand and behave at all times, towards patients, visitors and colleagues according to the Trust values of safe, kind, excellent. Willingness to alter working pattern during busy periods. The ability to travel independently between sites and have unrestricted access to a motor vehicle insured for business purposes.

Desirable

Full clean driving licence.
