The working pattern is Tuesday-Saturday.

You'll be required to work some bank holidays, working with occasional rota changes to help cover annual leave within the team.


What it's like to work here:This vacancy is included in a trial of the 'Disability Confident' scheme (level 1).


We are a relatively small property, with a friendly atmosphere, run by a dedicated staff team and wider volunteer support.

You'll be working within the House and Collections Team, reporting to the Senior Collections and House Officer. This is a new role within the team and is an exciting opportunity to develop your career. The role will primarily involve working by yourself with support as part of the wider team.


The Workhouse and Infirmary is an unusual National Trust property focussing on the social history of the poor, giving a voice to their stories and experiences.

It is a complex place that challenges us to reconsider how we care for all in our communities today.

With many connections to important contemporary questions surrounding welfare and inequality, it is an exciting time to be joining the team.


What you'll be doing:

As a Collections Assistant, you'll be working with the Senior Collections and House Officer and Collections and House Officer in an incredible place, helping with the day-to-day cleaning and care of the buildings and completing collections management tasks.

No detail will go unnoticed, and you'll keep a keen eye on everything from the environmental conditions in a room, to signs of wear and tear.

You'll keep accurate records too, including using our Collections Management System.


In this visitor facing role, we'd love you to talk to visitors about the work you're doing, and the collections we have.

You'll also be part of the wider team of employees and volunteers, helping to cover where necessary. You'll talk about the practices and techniques we use and the history/story of the property.


You will be involved in helping to build and provide our conservation in action offer for visitors during the open season.

You will also be an integral part of the annual deep clean of the buildings during the closed season.

Who we're looking forWe'd love to hear from you if you have;

  • A keen interest in history, historic properties and conservation of their collections
  • A good understanding of preventive conservation
  • Knowledge of the approach required when working with fragile historic collections as well as Health & Safety and emergency procedures
  • Good manual dexterity and eyetohand skills and ability to work from ladders and tower scaffold
  • The ability to support volunteers to perform at their best
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills, and are a great team player
  • A willingness to undertake continuing professional development and personal skills development and have an enthusiasm to learn
