Job overview

To be the Operational Lead with responsibility for the delivery the highest possible standard of Portering Service to Patients, Staff and Visitors at all times.

To provide leadership to the Portering (ADM's) whilst ensuring that the requirements and standards laid down by the Trust are maintained including the management of staff rosters and adherence to budgetary constraints – continuously striving to improve our services. To ensure the hospital has a reputation for its high quality Portering service.

The Post Holder will need to be fully aware of the Trust's Value and Behaviours and Patient First initiatives and act accordingly

Main duties of the job

To communicate, effectively and give clear and concise instructions following interpretation of information coming through in a pressurised environment.

To ensure staff are given all relevant information through staff briefs, feedback from meetings and other sources of information.

Further communication will be required with a wide range of people, including colleagues, other Trust staff, visitors and contractors in an appropriate manner that promotes the Trust's values at all times.

Complete any required documentation/requests for information to meet the requirements of the Trust's policies and procedures.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To manage Portering activities including patient movement, domestic and clinical waste removal, blood sample/blood product collections, transport of medical gases, movement of deceased patients, post duties and departmental cover, etc. using machinery in full compliance with safe operating procedures as required.

To liaise with other Portering Duty Managers/ADMs ensuring continued service supervision during times of absence, annual leave or sickness.

To work and ensure that all Portering staff work in accordance with Health and Safety Guidelines and Trust/Departmental policies and procedures at all times.

To allocate duties and shifts using the agreed staff roster system ensuring effective Portering cover within allocated budgets and provide monthly payroll information to the Site Operations Manager ensuring all shift enhancements and overtime is captured correctly.

To work with the Site Operations Manager to plan and amend work schedules/staffing levels highlighting any perceived need for staff overtime and bank expenditure to meet fluctuating service activity/demands.

To ensure that all shifts are staffed appropriately at all times, staff contingency plans are in place. Wherever possible, initial absences must be covered by the Assistant Duty Porterting Manager's.

Assist the Site Operations Manager in the recruitment and selection of staff to ensure staff levels meet service requirements.

To proactively manage the process of managing sickness absence in line with Trust policy including the completion of Return to Work documentation and holding formal/informal sickness review meetings with staff.

To manage the initial stages of disciplinary, capability and grievance action, in accordance with the relevant HR polices.

To maintain expected standards of conduct in line with Trust values and ensure that Portering staff wear the correct uniform, safety footwear and personal protective clothing as necessary and act as a role model in this respect.

Ensure that all work is undertaken in line with health, safety, security and Trust policies and procedures including infection control.

Maintain efficient and accurate records, quality audits, training records and equipment audits in line with the Trust Portering Operational Schedules.

Report accidents / incidents on DATIX, as soon as they occur, undertaking appropriate investigation and implement preventative action plans.

Report any mechanical defects/building fabric to the Help Desk

Ensure the correct transfer of clinical, domestic and recycling waste from all areas to external waste compounds

Play a key role in ensuring that the hospital sites remain operational and accessible in the event of extreme weather conditions.

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria

Good Standard of Secondary Education to GCSE level or equivalent. Proven experience of operational work in Portering Service in the NHS, public or private sector. NVQ Level 3 in Customer Services or equivalent relevant experience. Recognised Qualification in Supervisory or Management Skills or equivalent experience gained in supervisory level Full Driver's Licence

Previous experience as a Porter with an in depth knowledge of Portering protocols in relation to current best practices. Previous experience of planning rotas and working with electronic time and attendance systems High level of knowledge on Portering Services, equipment, medical gases, their handlin and safe usage procedures, tugs and specialist beds and equipment. Knowledge of Trust Policies and Service User Department procedures inclusive of waste protocols
