Job summary

The successful candidate will join the highly motivated multidisciplinary breast team based at Burnley Teaching Hospital for 12 months. The team consists of 4 Consultant Breast Surgeons, an SAS doctor, an ST3+ Trainee, three Foundation Doctors and 2 Advanced Clinical Practitioners. The Unit treats 460 breast cancers (50% screen detected) each year in the dedicated breast unit facilities (opened December 2017), housed adjacent to the breast screening unit.

Main duties of the job

The position is primarily for service provision in our one-stop new referral clinics, although individual learning needs can be addressed through other clinical activities such as results and follow-up clinics, MDT and theatre lists. The unit offers both a symptomatic and screening service with a community based breast pain clinic. Our surgeons offer the full range of breast oncoplastic procedures and you will have exposure to all of the services whilst in the unit. You will also be encouraged to build on your leadership skills and be involved in clinical education and quality improvement within the breast unit.

Each of the consultants have additional roles either within the department or at the Trust level. This can provide opportunities for development in Clinical Education, Clinical Research, Governance, Service & Workforce transformation. The Unit hosts medical students from both University of Central Lancashire and Lancaster University along with allied healthcare professionals in training such as physicians associates, advanced clinical practitioners and nursing staff.

The successful candidate will develop a personal development plan with their allocated supervisor at the start of the post and identify their intended learning outcomes. The unit will support relevant learning opportunities, for example teaching and quality improvement activities.

There is no on call commitment.

About us

East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust was formed in 2003 from the merger of Blackburn, Hyndburn and Ribble Valley NHS Trust and the Burnley Hospitals NHS Trust. East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust provides a caring service to a population of over Across all sites the trust has 1041 beds. Recently both Blackburn and Burnley sites have been recognised as teaching hospitals in association with University of Central Lancashire (UCLan). Along with UCLan medical students, ELHT also offers placements to medical students from Lancaster and University of West Indies.

Services are provided from two main sites, the Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital and Burnley General Teaching Hospital. In 2006 a service reconimplemented which resulted in the Blackburn site becoming the centre for all acute services in East Lancashire. The Emergency Department (ED) at Blackburn is the only ED for East Lancashire and is a Trauma Unit in the Lancashire Trauma network with the Trauma Centre based at the Royal Preston Hospital. The ED is supported by Urgent Care Centre at Blackburn and Burnley and a Minor Injuries Unit at Accrington

Furthermore, several are honorary lecturers at various partner universities including University of Central Lancashire, Lancaster University, Edge Hill University, Manchester Metropolitan University and Salford University. As a result, the Consultant body is able to offer mentorship and coaching to the successful candidate along with networking opportunities for personal development.

The Breast Surgery Team also includes beyond the core staff listed above: 2 trainee advanced clinical practitioners, 2 physician associates and specialist breast care nurses.

This post is subject to the Terms and Conditions of Service for Hospital Medical Staff (Sept 2002).

A satisfactory medical examination is a condition of employment for medical and dental staff in the NHS.
