Overview:
The Centre for Modelling and Simulation (CFMS) is a growing, independent digital
engineering consultancy providing technical expertise to help organisations create cutting
edge solutions by pioneering new approaches to product development and enabling
innovation services.

new robotics capability) to help develop more effective engineering solutions across

About the role:
CFMS' Engineering Computing Services (ECS) team provides infrastructure and technical
systems to both internal stakeholders and external customers, making use of leading-edge

scientific computing services including:

  • Two HPC clusters totalling ~5000 cores
  • Openstack private cloud systems
  • Petabytes of GPFS and Ceph based storage
  • High performance ethernet networking
  • General purpose business computing
The role is to support and develop the technical operation of the company's IT systems in
alignment with its business objectives.

As a member of ECS you will be expected to play a role in the management and
maintenance of the compute, storage, and underlying network infrastructure for CFMS. ECS
delivers a variety of services using a DevOps and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) approach,
managing systems through tools such as Ansible, Git, Terraform, Kubernetes, Bash and
Python.

As a LSA in the ECS team you will be exposed to a wide variety of exciting and leading-edge
technologies and systems, with many opportunities to learn new skills.

Key Responsibilities:
The LSA will take a key role on day to day running of CFMS IT systems, including:

  • Supporting the development and upgrade of Openstack and Kubernetes systems.
  • Provide support to the wider technical team.
  • Planning and implementing OS and software upgrades to virtual machines and
- physical servers.

  • Monitoring and analysis of system performance.
Operate under the guidance of all policies and procedures and promote an environment of
continuous improvement.

Experience

  • Credible Linux experience
  • Experience with cloud and virtualisation
  • Experience with containerisation technologies

Skills, Knowledge and Competencies:
**Essential: - Knowledge of Linux and/or UNIX

  • Demonstrate best practice administration, management and installation of Linux
- based systems and technologies

  • Comfortable with the Linux command line and with Bash
  • Understanding of software packaging and management on Linux
- o apt/yum/dnf/zypper/pkg

  • Knowledge of version control and automation tools
  • Git
  • Preferably Ansible but experience with Puppet/Chef useful
  • Able to work with virtualisation/containerisation technologies
  • Creation and management of virtual machines
  • Docker / Podman
  • Knowledge of Linux security strategies
  • Comfortable with Linux patching regimes
  • Appropriately deploying and maintaining Linux systems in a secure manner.
  • Basic IP/Ethernet networking

**Desirable: - DevOps methodologies (including CI/CD)

  • Container orchestration technologies (e.g. Kubernetes, dockercompose)
  • Basic knowledge of programming languages (e.g. Python, javascript)
  • Automation/Orchestration of private/public cloud (e.g Packer/Terraform)
  • Understanding of more advanced IP/Ethernet networking (e.g. VXLANs, VLANs,
firewalling, routing, HTTP proxies, TLS)

Key Relationships:
The LSA will work closely with the Head of ECS and the ECS team, but also with the wider
CFMS technical team and directly with customer end users.
