Mid Norfolk Mencap is a small charity that supports adults with learning disabilities. We are looking for passionate and enthusiastic individuals, to join our Community Outreach Service staff team as Support Workers. The service supports and cares for individuals with varying degrees of learning disabilities.


The Community Outreach Service Support Worker role is based in Dereham, working flexibly as per the needs of the service, full time (37 hours per week) primarily Monday to Friday, on a rota basis.

Occasionally there may be evening and weekend shifts. The hourly rate of pay is £12.85 per hour, and £14.14 per hour for Weekends and Bank Holidays.

Principle Duties and Responsibilities

  • To provide 1:1 support to enable people with learning disabilities to enjoy greater independence in their everyday life at home and in the community, in accordance with their agreed personalised support and risk management plan.
  • To encourage and facilitate increased independence by supporting participation in daily living activities and opportunities.
  • To work with people, their families, team members and partner organisations to ensure that support is tailored to meet their individual needs and wishes.
  • To use a range of communication methods to assist people to make informed decisions and choices about the issues affecting their lives.
  • To assist with everyday living tasks and provide practical support and skills development in such areas as: personal finances, healthy eating, healthy lifestyle, building relationships, employment, safety in the home, accessing leisure/ educational/health facilities, administration of medication, risk taking, shopping, cooking, and cleaning and much more.
  • To be familiar with and adhere to the organisation and service's values, policies, and procedures, maintaining records and reporting accordingly.
  • To preserve and respect the dignity and privacy of people and their families and always observe confidentiality.
  • To attend and participate in team meetings, supervisions, appraisals, and training as requested and required by your manager.
  • To follow best practice guidance regarding Safeguarding, Care Standards Act, Personal Care support, Health and Safety and managing risks legislation to promote independence.
  • To work flexibly and creatively to meet the needs of the service and clients, providing cover as required in the event of staff shortages.
  • To support anti-discrimination policies and procedures and always promote equality of opportunity.
  • To undertake such additional duties appropriate to the post and to support the organisation's wider goals by working flexibly across the organisation from time to time as determined by your manager.
  • Successfully complete induction standards and commit to professional development.
  • To take additional responsibility for nominated client's co-ordinating the filing, recording, implementation and updating of their support plan.
  • To ensure any incidents occurring during working hours are appropriately managed, recorded and reported through the line-management channels.
  • To utilise the appropriate recording forms, policies, and procedures to record information relating to support and tasks completed, including financial records.
