Introduction

The Department of Education seeks casual research assistants to assist with data collection for the EEF-funded Communication Friendly Settings efficacy trial.

Communication Friendly Settings is a whole-setting programme that aims to promote the speech, language and communication skills of all children.

It aims to do so through providing whole setting CPD designed to improve the quality and quantity of interactions between staff and children.

Researchers at The University of York and The University of Sheffield are evaluating the impact of the programme using a randomised controlled trial design.

Further information on the study can be found at:

Main purpose of the role

Researchers in the Department of Education, University of York, are recruiting a number of temporary Research Assistants/Research Trainees to work on the evaluation of the Communication Friendly Settings programme as described above.

The purpose of the role will be to attend pre-scheduled visits to early years settings to administer one-to-one assessments with children aged 3-4 years old.

The assessments are the Oxford LanguageScreen and the Renfrew action Picture Test. The assessments will predominantly be conducted via tablets provided for the tasks.

Each assessment will take approximately 20 minutes per child and each setting will have approximately 12 children to be assessed.

Research assistants will be scheduled to visit settings individually or in pairs. Visits will take place between 18thSeptember and 20thOctober 2023.

Full training will be provided to ensure research assistants are prepared for the setting visits and able to administer the assessments correctly.

The role will involve travel as data collection will take place in early years settings in and around the North East and the East Midlands.

Travelling time to and from schools is classed as part of the working day and will be paid at the hourly rate.

It would be beneficial if you lived in one of these regions.

It is desirable (but not essential) that you can drive and have access to a vehicle in order to visit settings (you would require a full driving licence and would need to add 'business use' to your car insurance policy, if you do not already have this, which may or may not incur additional charges which cannot be reimbursed).

You can claim 45p per mile when using your own car to visit schools. If you live outside of the areas listed above, overnight stays are highly likely.

Accommodation and rail travel (if applicable) will be booked by the research team in advance and you will be able to claim back expenses according to the University of York Travel and Expenses Policy.

Appointment for this position is dependent on a clear enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check, which will be undertaken if you have been successful following interview, as this role involves visits to settings and one-to-one work with children. Evidence of entitlement to live and work in the UK will also be required.
