Overview
Upwards Residential Care Services (CQC) operates as a registered service with Care Quality Commission.

We are seeking Support Workers in the Lancaster area, between the Forest of Bowland and the Yorkshire Dales, and near to the Lake District area to provide personal care and support.

The home accommodates young adults with autism and complex needs with behaviour difficulties. We pride ourselves in providing a high quality person centred care to Service Users in their own homes to ensure they can live the life they choose

Job description and main responsibilities

  • To work as an assistant or coworker in therapeutic activities and/or group work with the support and guidance of senior staff.
  • To listen and talk to service users, families and their carers' and develop therapeutic relationships with professional boundaries.
  • To undertake and accurately document observations and clinical care in line with Upwards Residential Care Services Policy.
  • To ensure effective communication, either verbal or written, amongst the team, reporting any change or unusual occurrence in the service user's behaviour or condition.
  • To accurately report and feedback any concerns.
  • To understand the importance of and maintain the need for confidentiality in all service users matters.
  • To understand the importance of safeguarding, Mental Health Act and capacity assessments
  • To participate in the maintenance of a clean, tidy and safe environment.
  • To value diversity and promote equality of opportunity for all and to ensure individuals are treated fairly.
  • To ensure that any interventions are provided in accordance with least restrictive practice.
  • To carry out duties as allocated.
  • To support the development and implementation of Positive Behaviour Support Plans and other therapeutic therapies.
  • Attend to personal hygiene including bathing, toileting and dressing, promoting quality of life and independence.
  • Support and assist at mealtimes as required.
  • To attend education and training sessions specially arranged for the team.
  • To carry out assigned tasks under the supervision of qualified staff.
  • To provide guidance to new staff on the induction to the ward and participate in induction and training programmes for staff.
  • To undertake support to new staff as appropriate, supporting them complete their care certificate.
  • To act as a positive role model to the service users and staff.
  • To understand restraint guidelines and MAPPA principles
  • To attend / undertake statutory and mandatory training as required.
  • To have an interest in selfdevelopment and be active in enhancing own personal knowledge.
  • Escort service users as appropriate to areas outside the service as delegated.
Adhere to appropriate Upwards Residential Care Services and local policies, procedures and guidelines.

Essential criteria

  • NVQ level 2 in Care (or equivalent experience) or a commitment to work towards Care Certificate or willing to work towards
Experience

  • Experience of working in Supported Living settings
  • Experience of working with Children and Young People/Adults
  • Experience of working with people with a learning disability and/or autism
  • Experience of providing care and support in a community setting and/or residential setting
  • Experience of carrying out observations
  • Experience of Prevention and Management of Violence and Aggression trained in MAPPA or PMVA
  • Experience of working with people with a learning disability to enhance their quality of life.
  • Experience of working in a multidisciplinary team
  • Experience of being involved in the delivery of therapeutic activities.
  • Understanding of positive behavioural support
  • An awareness of stigma and discrimination of people with learning disabilities
  • Experience of epilepsy management and medication management
Skills and Abilities

  • Able to impart knowledge, supervise and support staff team.
  • Able to communicate effectively with Service Users and their carers'.
  • Able to remain calm in stressful situations and display patience and empathy.
  • Able to respond sensitively to emotional distress.
  • Able to report observations accurately and concisely.
  • Able to develop and maintain effective therapeutic relationships with Service Users and families.
  • Able to organise day to day tasks and activities based on an agreed workplan.
Knowledge

  • Knowledge of Ofsted or a commitment to gain knowledge of Ofsted regulations.
  • Knowledge of Care Quality Commission or a commitment to gain knowledge of Ofsted regulations.
