You will be part of the wider Healthy Child Programme (School Nursing and Health Visiting) delivering the Healthy Child Programme 0-19 which focuses on improving public health outcomes.

The post holder will work as part of a Healthy Child Programme 0-19 (School Nursing or Health Visiting).


You will contribute to the delivery the Health Child Programme (HCP 0-19) to babies, children and young people and their families.

You will support School Nurses/Health Visitors/Midwives to deliver health education, individual and group programmes for children, young people and parents/carers and parents to be.

You will support the registrant to undertake assessment and screening and weighing and measuring babies and children. Delivery of health promotion and education packages to children, young people, parents/carers and parents to be.


Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust provides integrated acute and community Healthcare in the West Midlands serving a population of 260,000 residents.

Walsall Manor Hospital houses the full range of district general hospital services. The £170 million development was completed in 2010 and we are continually upgrading. Construction of the new integrated critical care unit was completed in 2018, extension of a Neonatal Unit and an approved plan to build a brand new, state of the art Emergency Department which will commence in 2021

We provide high quality, friendly and effective community health services from multiple sites covering Walsall. Our multidisciplinary services include rapid response and homebased care, so that those with long term conditions and the frail elderly can remain in their own homes

Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the ongoing assessment of a child by completing the appropriate electronic templates for allocated children, recording and reporting all clinical and behavioural information to the registrant for action and planning purposes.
  • To undertake, and report back on delegated clinical activities e.g. lead and undertake the weighing and measuring of children refer on appropriately for follow up, provide health promotion advice and guidance to school children, parents and teachers.
  • To enable children and parents to make the most effective use of resources within the service by ensuring they receive uptodate information and to respond to any questions constructively.
  • To pass onto/seek assistance from other colleagues promptly in respect of any questions that you are unable to resolve.
  • To use clinical judgement and skills to report any identified concerns or changes in children's health status immediately to the relevant registrant.
  • To collect data from children/ parents for recognised outcome measure and document for registrant to interpret.
  • To provide support to children, young people and/or parents/carers of children who may have identified behavioural or emotional health concerns by maintaining a calm, safe environment and reporting back to the registrant as indicated. This includes management of sleep, eating or toileting problems.
  • To provide health education and promotion sessions, from antenatal to school aged to parents/carers, children and young people. Delivering evidence based packages.
  • To plan and implement straightforward tasks and work guided by standard operating procedures and protocols and undertake roles/duties as delegated by a registrant
  • To communicate effectively with all parents and children as well as colleagues in health and education at all times.
  • To use appropriate communication that takes account of the wellbeing of the individual.
  • To observe and report any changes in a child's condition to a registrant and to participate and contribute in meetings as appropriate.
  • To maintain accurate electronic child health records in accordance with the Trust standards.
  • To participate and contribute to health education sessions in schools/other educational/child care or community settings
  • To have the ability to interpret sensitive information and communicate with a sympathetic and empathic approach to families.
  • To be able to motivate and persuade children/ parents through effective communication skills, utilising verbal and nonverbal skills. Communication will be tailored to the child's/ parents' level of comprehension or cognition for example, using interpreters.
