We are looking for an motivated, innovative and experienced paediatric dietitian to join our team based at University Hospitals Dorset (currently at Poole Hospital site) to lead on Neonatal Nutrition as well as jointly cover the general paediatric inpatient and outpatients services. You may be currently working as band 6 with experience in paediatrics or as a band 7.

A clinical services review for Dorset will involve the relocation of services including the paediatric service moving to a brand new, purpose built women's and children's unit on the Bournemouth site in 2025.

You will be involved in regular professional update meetings with a CPD aspect e.g. journal club and our twice yearly Dorset Dietitians Education sessions - a Dorset wide education and networking dietetic opportunity. In addition, the dietetic team is closely integrated with the Speech and Language Therapy Service, and part of Therapy Services, regularly engaging in joint working and shared learning with AHP colleagues.

Flexibility, and good communication, organisation and prioritisation skills are essential to this role. The successful candidate should be able to demonstrate excellent team working skills and motivation.

Main duties of the job The established and well respected paediatric dietetics team of 4 (3.2WTE) offer support to two busy children's wards and outpatient services. We are a Level 2 centre for Neonatal Intensive Care where this post holder is an integral part of the multi-disciplinary team. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced paediatric dietitian to join our team to cover NICU and paediatric gastroenterology services and in conjunction with the rest of the team the general in and outpatient service.

The paediatric dietetic team has specialist posts in diabetes, allergy, home enteral feeding and cystic fibrosis and the general ward and out patient work is shared. The dietitians work closely with all members of the paediatric MDT, including community based services such as health visitors and speech and language therapists.

The department in Poole Hospital has 15 dietitians across adult and paediatrics and offers training to A, B and C students on placement. As a senior dietitian within the department, the role will also involve providing support and mentorship to band 5 and 6 dietitians.

The dietetic team at Poole also works closely across the wider UHD Trust including the dietitians at Royal Bournemouth Hospital.

  • oBSc in Human Nutrition & Dietetics or equivalent qualification
  • oHCPC Registration
  • oEvidence of working at Masters Level or equivalent
  • oCompletion of validated post registration training
Desirable
  • oMember of BDA Paediatric Group
  • oMember of neonatal network group.
  • oIn-house Introduction to Management course.
  • oRelevant advanced post-graduate clinical training e.g. Masters Level modules or clinical training
  • oClinical Supervisory Skills training
  • oCoaching skills training
Experience Essential
  • oSignificant experience at band 6 or above working as a paediatric dietitian covering a variety of conditions
  • oExperience of NICU, or if no experience, must be willing to undertake masters module in neonatal nutrition
  • oExperience of autonomous management of children with complex nutritional needs
  • oExperience of working autonomously within a MDT
  • oExperience of leadership
  • oExperience of having undertaken audit
  • oClinical training and supervision of less experienced dietetic staff and staff from other professions
  • oExperience of implementing evidence-based practice
Desirable
  • oMasters module in neonatal nutrition
  • oBehaviour change/motivational interviewing experience/training
Skills Essential
  • oHigh level of Dietetic paediatric clinical skills, knowledge and clinical reasoning with a wide range of in and out patients
  • oAbility to assess, manage and treat patients with complex multi pathologies at specialist level and advise parents, carers and the wider MDT on the nutritional treatment plan.
  • oExcellent communication skills and the ability to communicate complex information effectively with all healthcare colleagues (verbally and written).
  • oAbility to effectively communicate a complex diagnosis with patients/carers, achieving consent and understanding of the treatment plans required
  • oExcellent IT and presentation skills.
  • oAble to initiate, evaluate and sustain changes to service development.
  • oAbility to manage workload on a day-to-day level as well as forward planning
Knowledge Essential
  • oSpecialist knowledge of a wide range of paediatric conditions and their dietetic interventions
  • oKnowledge of nutritional issues in neonatal care.
