Job summary

A message from Mr Andrew Furlong, Medical Director

An opportunity has arisen for a colleague to join my team as a Deputy Medical Director. The primary focus of this post will be on Urgent & Emergency Care (UEC)

We are looking for a committed, high quality medical leader to join and complement our existing senior clinical and operational leadership teams. You will be expected to evidence a track record that demonstrates you have the skills to successfully deliver this role and also to be able to articulate how you would plan to deliver the key priorities as described in the attached job summary.

Main duties of the job

The post is designed to build on the existing operational links between the Corporate Medical, Operational, Nursing and Clinical Management Group (CMG) teams; work alongside the Deputy Chief Operating Officer and Deputy Chief Nurse for Urgent & Emergency Care; Associate Medical Director (UEC), and the wider team to ensure active Corporate Medical support and leadership for programmes to improve unplanned care pathways and productivity across our services both in and out of UHL. As such, it will be essential that you are able to build effective relationships.

You will be expected to have significant experience in Medical Management and be able to demonstrate a track record of dynamic and innovative leadership; be comfortable working with complexity; and have experience of working across organisational boundaries. You should have experience of overseeing & delivering transformational programmes to redesign care pathways and improve overall productivity within clinical services.

About us

Our new strategy, developed with the support and feedback of colleagues, patients, and partners, is our compass for the next seven years

We have four primary goals:

high-quality care for all, being a great place to work, partnerships for impact, and research and education excellence

And we will embed health equality in all we do - taking active steps to reduce the avoidable differences in healthcare that some people face, working in partnership with communities.

Our strategy is underpinned by new values and we will work to ensure they are an everyday reality for all:

we are compassionate, we are proud, we are inclusive, and we are one team

This is an exciting moment as we look to the future with clarity on what we already do well and where we need to focus our energies to make an even bigger difference for the people we serve.

About the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust:

Job description

Job responsibilities

Whilst not essential, it would be desirable that you have knowledge and leadership experience of delivering new ways of working across Urgent & Emergency Care pathways at a multidisciplinary level to support alternatives to admission, closer inter-speciality working and safe & timely discharge.

I and the wider Trust Board are committed to making UHL a clinically led organisation with a leadership team that reflects the communities we serve. You will work as part of a team across UHL to drive improvements in care and to create an environment in which individuals and teams can excel. We want UHL to have one of the best cultures in the NHS because an inclusive and empowering culture delivers safe care. As such, a key requirement is that you are a compassionate and inclusive leader who listens and is responsive.

You will have support, autonomy and commitment from your colleagues, myself and the Executive Team. We will offer you the opportunity of further development.

Now is an exciting time to be at UHL. The progress we have made in UEC, planned care and cancer has meant we have been exited from the national tiering programme for all areas, as well as seeing large improvements in our staff survey this year. You will help us build upon the progress we are making to drive short, medium and long-term improvements in our UEC pathways across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.

The post is open to consultants, appropriately experienced SAS doctors (working at Hospital Specialist or Associate Specialist level) and General Practitioners on the performers list.

To undertake this role you will need to be able to commit circa 6 PAs of your current job plan.

This opportunity is open to colleagues who work less than full time (LTFT) and we would welcome a discussion about individual circumstances if you are interested in the role.

The post also attracts a non-pensionable management supplement.

If you are interested in this opportunity and would like to find out more, please contact myself Jon Melbourne, UHL Chief Operating Officer, an informal discussion.

To apply please sent your CV and a personal statement to: Kieley Dowell (EA to Medical Director) email: by midday on Friday 14 June 2024.

Your personal statement should be no more than two sides and should identify why you believe you should be considered for this role. In addition, you should highlight how you align with our vision and values and how these contribute to the delivery of high-quality care. You should provide details of two referees; one of whom should be your current line manager.

You are also welcome to apply online via NHS jobs, and submit your application.
