Our Operating Theatre Department have an exciting opportunity to join our well established theatre team as a full / part time Band 3 Perioperative Care Assistant in the Scrub role.

The specialities we are recruiting to are, General Surgery, Ophthalmic, Orthopaedics, Gynaecology & Urology working under the direct supervision of the registered practitioner.

To undertake a range of duties including clerical and direct care activities under the direct supervision of a registered member of the theatre staff, guided by QCF level 3 Health Diploma in Peri-operative Support competencies.

The post holder is expected to show initiative, recognising their own limitations and work within the boundaries of the National Occupational Standards.

The senior support worker will be expected to extend their skills to include scrubbing for minor procedures.


This comes at a time when are completing our £9.2 million state of the art additional 3 theatre new build investing in the service provision to our community.

Our specialties include Ophthalmology, General Surgery, ENT, Gynecology, Urology, Maxilla-facial, elective Orthopedics, Acutes & trauma, Obstetrics and Post Anaesthetic Care Unit.


OVERALL RESPONSIBILITY:

  • The post holder will be assigned to work in one area of the directorate but maybe expected to provide cover in other areas because of sickness/absence.
  • To participate in receiving and supporting patients during clinical procedures.
  • Contribute to the support of patients, relatives and friends whilst in the operating department.
  • To mentor, supervise trainee HCSW and pre-registration students in a professional manner providing support and encouragement. To regularly provide assessment of QCF units following completion of appropriate training, to ensure assessments of junior staff are completed in a timely manner.
  • Adhere to all Trust, Directorate and Departmental policies and procedures.

MAINDUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Any duties as directed by the clinical theatre manager or lead nurse/ODP in a specific theatre.
  • Act as a circulating member of the Theatre team
  • Assist in the care, labelling and despatch of specimens for laboratory examination.
  • Assist in the preparation, stocking up and cleaning of the theatre suite.
  • Transfer of patients using various modes of transport, throughout the hospital
adhering to current manual handling regulations and theatre competencies.

  • Contribute to the support of patients in transition from one caring setting to another, following transfer competencies.
  • Participating in team briefs and patient safety checklists.
  • To act as link person alongside registered nurse/ODP for areas such as: Infection Prevention, Manual Handling etc.

SCRUB ROLE

  • Act as a junior scrub member of the theatre team for specific specialities and procedures outlined in the agreed departmental scope of practice, following competency based training in line with the Perioperative Care Support & Perioperative Care Surgical Support units of the National Occupational Standards for Perioperative Care.

POST ANAESTHETIC CARE UNIT ROLE

  • Assist in the care of post-operative patients under the direct supervision of a registered nurse/practitioner.

PERSONNEL

  • Liaise and co-operate with other ward and department staff within the
  • Participate in the promotion of good relationships within the department.
  • Participate in regular departmental meetings.
  • Ensure strict confidentiality with regard to patients and staff at all times.
  • Take part in a personal staff development review and ensure one's own Practice is developed in line with the KSF outline for specific post
  • Participate in the regular updating all mandatory training e.g. Fire, lifting & handling, tourniquet safety, diathermy, medical gases, infection control and resuscitation etc.
  • Ensuring that you adhere to the agreed uniform policy.
  • Report any shortfalls in the departmental stores or equipment to a senior member of staff.
  • Report to the Person in Charge any incident, accidents or complaints within the department.
  • Ensure strict confidentiality with regard to patients and staff at all times.
  • To work in other areas within the hospital as directed by the Theatre Clinical Manager or Deputy.
