About the - Housing Services


Housing Services provides a housing management and repairs service to our tenants and a repairs service to other projects in BHT.

We deliver a housing management service to approximately 700 properties.

We are responsible for repairs, voids and lettings, major works and cyclical programmes, day to day general housing management, anti-social behaviour investigations and enforcement action, income management and managing external and internal relationships.


Our aim is to provide a quality and person-centred housing service, both in our Community Housing in Brighton and Hastings; and our temporary accommodation in Hastings, Eastbourne Brighton, Haywards Heath, Burgess Hill and other areas of Sussex.

Our concept is a well-managed tenancy where landlord and tenant are equitable partners in a business arrangement.

About the Role


The Maintenance Operative will provide a repairs service predominantly in Brighton & Hove, however, is expected to travel to Eastbourne, Hastings, Burgess Hill, Haywards Heath and other locations as required to complete repairs.

The role is key to providing a responsive and effective maintenance and repair service to our tenants, clients, residential projects and offices.

You will respond to repair or general maintenance requests across BHT Sussex, offering a chance to use your experience and skills to provide general maintenance service.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Painting and decorating.
  • Joinery first line maintenance of fixtures and fittings, examples: tightening screws on window hinges, maintenance on door handles, minor repairs as a temporary BHT Sussex
- measure after break-ins, vandalism etc. Replace locks and handles if a repair is not possible.

  • Plumbing for example, unblocking sinks, traps and waste pipes, adjustment and rewashering of taps.


 Internal Glazing
  • Remedial action after such incidents as vandalism, accidents or breakins, for example boarding up of broken windows or replacement of small panes of glass


 Electrics
  • Carry out PAT testing, in accordance with safe working practices and record the results on a spreadsheet. Relevant training and equipment will be provided.

Person Specification:


To be successful in the role of Maintenance Operative you will need to have great communication skills and be committed to the values of BHT Sussex.

Some of the key skills and experience you will need to bring with you include:

  • A working knowledge of repairs and the experience of using this in your role (s) within social housing.
  • Knowledge of delivering the appropriate customer care to effectively deliver a service.
  • A working knowledge of repairs and the experience of using this in your role (s) within social housing.
  • Experience and skill in decorating, plumbing glazing, basic carpentry, locksmith and general maintenance.
  • Ability to listen and communicate effectively with a wide range of people and organisations, whilst setting professional boundaries.
