Job Role Winter Shelter Support Worker - 6 Months Temporary Contract

Job hours: 35 hours per week (Includes weekends as required on a rota basis)

Shifts: 9 am - 5 pm, 4 pm - 9 pm, 9 pm - 9 am (night rate)

£12.50 per hour / £13.50 per hour nightly rate

Happydays UK is an expanding charity supporting adults and families in crisis and/ or at risk of homelessness. We do this through serving the local community via several services.

Our Winter Shelter aims to serve those who have multiple, complex needs, and are living a street - based life.

We operate support on the foundation of our values, promoting acceptance, courage and honesty, to inspire positive change.

We are a progressive and forward-thinking organisation, and our support work is relationship focused, and built on trust to ensure the best possible outcome for the people who use our services.

As part of this ethos, our Winter Shelter operates a High Tolerance Drug and Alcohol Policy, with a view to keeping our residents safe, in a warm and welcoming environment whilst promoting harm reduction strategies.

Our Winter Shelter Support Workers will proactively engage our residents, with the emphasis on empathy, compassion, and from a trauma informed approach to get the best possible outcomes.


PERSONAL ATRIBUTES AND TRAINING

  • Proven experience working with individuals with high alcohol and drug tolerance
  • Demonstrated knowledge of substance misuse issues, and the impact of homelessness on individuals with dependency related issues.
  • Understanding of relevant legislation, policies, and procedures related to homelessness, substance misuse, and safeguarding adults in need of care and support
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish rapport and build trusting relationships with residents from diverse backgrounds.
  • Compassion, empathy, and non-judgmental attitudes towards individuals facing substance dependency and homelessness.
  • Strong crisis intervention and problem-solving abilities, with the capacity to manage challenging situations with calmness and professionalism, from a trauma informed approach
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team, collaborating with colleagues, external agencies, and community resources.
  • Proficiency in maintaining accurate records and documentation, ensuring compliance with data protection regulations and confidentiality requirements.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development and staying up to date with current research and best practices in substance misuse and homeless support.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of the specific needs and challenges faced by individuals with high alcohol and drug tolerance living in The Winter Shelter.
  • Establish trusting and supportive relationships with clients, demonstrating empathy, patience, and non-judgmental attitudes towards substance misuse.
  • Conduct initial assessments to identify the unique needs, goals, and strengths of each resident, paying special attention to their alcohol and substance dependencies with regards to risk management
  • Implement personalised support plans that address residents' substance misuse issues, mental health concerns, and social circumstances, in collaboration with our local partner agencies and substance misuse services
  • Provide one-on-one support sessions, crisis intervention, and emotional support to residents dealing with substance dependency-related challenges, helping them build resilience and motivation for change.
  • Offer harm reduction strategies and practical advice to residents, emphasising safety, hygiene, and responsible alcohol and substance use.
  • Collaborate closely with external agencies, including substance misuse treatment and recovery services, mental health services, and local authorities, to ensure residents receive appropriate care and support.
  • Assist residents in accessing housing, employment, education, healthcare, and other essential services that can positively impact their recovery journey.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation of resident interactions, progress, and support plans, ensuring confidentiality and adherence to data protection regulations.
  • Participate in regular team meetings and professional development opportunities to enhance knowledge and skills related to substance misuse and homelessness.
  • Stay informed about current research, and best practices in the field of substance dependency and homeless support, incorporating new knowledge into service delivery
  • Assign tasks and responsibilities to volunteers, ensuring a smooth workflow and effective utilisation of resources.
  • Foster a positive and inclusive volunteer environment, recognising and appreciating their contributions.
