Background
Sport & Fitness is responsible for operating the extensive sport and recreation provision of the University of Birmingham.

Its caters for the whole sports continuum from elite athlete to beginner; it supports 6,500 members, 40 performance clubs, over 40 sports scholars and offers an extensive active lifestyles and intra league programme.

It stages big events for a number of British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS), national governing bodies and external groups, with spectator numbers reaching 3,000 for an individual event.

It services the many different user groups drawn from the University - societies, medical school, groups of friends and departments, and the city - athletic, swimming, football, rugby, hockey, and gymnastics clubs as well as many schools, local authority groups and the more commercial provider.

It aims for a collegiate style of management and encourages the self-development of all staff members.

Role Summary


You will be responsible for lifeguarding and dry side facilities management duties, assisting the Facility Managers in the effective day-to-day management and operation of facilities, ensuring services are delivered safely.


Main duties

Swimming pool

  • Lifeguarding the pool as part of a team of guards, managing pool etiquette and lane usage in line with the Normal Operating Procedure (NOP) and Terms and Conditions of use.
  • Setting up the pool according to the timetable, including adjusting the depth of the pool and configuration as required.
  • Performing water quality tests for the swimming pool, reporting any results not within working parameters. Carrying out plant room checks.
  • Pool vacuum set up and take out, cleaning of the machine.
  • Attending training once a month outside of normal shift pattern, lifeguard training, situational training, fire warden training.

Dry side (indoor facilities)

  • Setting up dryside facilities in accordance timetables and instructions.
  • Dealing with customer enquiries including first aid.
  • Assisting with the training of new members of staff and casual staff by showing them how to perform equipment setups to recognised guidelines. All training matrices will be signed off by a duty manager.

General area management duties

  • Preparing the facilities prior to opening up and securing at end of business.
  • Ensuring facilities and equipment are prepared as and when required.
  • Assisting in the safe and tidy storage of equipment throughout the buildings, reporting any issues.
  • Patrolling the buildings on a regular basis and carrying out periodic checks on facilities, ensuring their safe and proper use at all times, checking on internal and external security
