The primary responsibility of the Senior ATO is to dispense accurate medicines in a timely manner for wards and departments under the direction of the Pharmacy Manager or Dispensary Co-ordinator at the Bristol Royal Infirmary.


You will lead in providing excellent customer service, providing a caring helpful service to other members of staff, patients and the general public.

You will be required to support the Specialist Bristol Eye Hospital clinic top ups and routine ward top ups.

  • Provide supervision and training support to a team of pharmacy assistants and new team members, helping to ensure services are provided in a safe, efficient and timely manner.
  • To accurately dispense and label medicines for inpatients, outpatients and discharge medications.
  • To work towards achieving the SW Dispensing & Labelling Accuracy certificate as a standard department level of competence in this area unless an equivalent certificate is already held.
  • To train & undertake when rotered, the provision of medicines compliance aids for patients that require these inhouse. Coordinating the work list of these prescriptions. Then securely sending our outsourced prescriptions to Lloyds at the appropriate daily times.
  • Responsible for topping up pharmacy stock on allocated wards, ensuring stock levels are correctly assessed for replenishment & stock rotated.
  • To monitor expiry dates both on ward topup & in dispensary when allocated.
  • Ensure that 'to follows' and urgent issues of stock are prepared and delivered quickly and accurately.
  • To return stock to dispensary balances in accordance with the guideline provided, sorting & identifying medicines which are suitable to be put back into use. Then correctly disposing those that cannot be used in line with the Trust waste policies.
  • To participate in the daily 15 item stock check and after training be responsible for looking into any discrepancies by running specific reports on the pharmacy CMM system to resolve these. Bringing any unresolved discrepancies to attention of the senior technician as per procedure.
  • To effectively use the pharmacy prescription tracking system to deal with enquiries from wards and departments.
  • To participate, after training, in using the dispensary robot to goods receive stock. Checking off stock to invoice & loading this into the robot as per the goods receiving process.
  • Maintain the dispensary in a neat and ordered condition.
  • Deal with enquires in an efficient, polite and courteous manner. train as a super user for the pharmacy automated dispensing system (robot), resolving problems
  • Contribute to the quality improvement of the pharmacy service contributing to audits, practice changes and reviews of processes.
