Job summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic and dynamic Emergency Medicine Doctor to work at the Bedford Hospital Site Emergency Department. You must be dedicated to providing high quality emergency care, maintaining clinical standards, and continually looking to drive positive change by developing the service.

This is an exciting challenge for an Emergency Medicine Doctor who is keen to be at the heart of delivering a modern emergency medicine service across resus, majors, ambulatory majors, minor injuries, and paediatrics

Your job will include a combination of direct clinical care, clinical education and personal development activities designed to support your career progression alongside delivery of the department's service objectives

Main duties of the job

Senior clinical fellows are expected to use their experience of emergency care to manage their own cases alongside supervision of junior team members.

Clinical administrative tasks including clinical coding, review of investigation reports and GP letters are to be completed using the department's electronic systems.

You will have an excellent level of personal organisation and efficiency and be proficient in verbal and written communication skills enabling you to deliver compassionate care while keeping the patient fully informed and engaged with decisions around their care.

You will have opportunity to expand your range of emergency care knowledge and skills working under the supervision of senior emergency medicine physicians.

You will have the knowledge and skills required to teach and supervise junior members of the team effectively across the full range of emergency presentations.

You will be supported to develop towards your career goals with a senior EM clinician as a clinical supervisor, an allocation of study leave with associated study budget, and a departmental education and training programme.

You will be expected to engage with teaching, audit, and quality improvement initiatives within the department.

Job responsibilities

All patients to be seen and assessed in accordance with departmental guidance.

Offer oversight and advice to junior doctors as required, escalating to the ED Consultant on the shop floor as appropriate.

Keeping meticulous patient records is essential. These must be dated and initialled, together with any other related administrative duties, including discharge letters, review of x-ray and pathology reports. All patients seen must be coded appropriately prior to discharge.

Duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances are at the request of the appropriate Consultant(s) in consultation where possible with colleagues both senior and junior. Additional commitments arising under this paragraph are exceptional. In particular, the Senior Clinical Fellows will not be required to undertake work of this kind for prolonged periods or on a regular basis.

To read and follow any protocols and clinical guidelines laid down (either in writing or verbally) for the department.

In case of any difficulties, either clinical or administrative, to ensure timely advice is sought from a senior colleague/ ED Consultant.

To accurately gather data required for clinical audit and to participate in audit meetings.

To participate in Middle Grade Teaching

Successful applicants will be required to be available to work a full shift rota including nights and weekends (applications for less than full time working will be considered).

Qualifications

Essential

Full registration with GMC Medical Council ALS provider MBBS or equivalent primary Medical qualification recognised by the GMC

Desirable

Higher Diploma APLS/PALS provider

Experience

Essential

Broad experience in Emergency Medicine Ability to manage fractures/ dislocations/ soft tissue injuries Three years post registration Registrar or Speciality Doctor level of responsibility

Desirable

UK or equivalent experience of hospital medicine Previous experience of at least 6 months at Registrar or equivalent grade
