About us

Groundwork is a leading regeneration charity, working through partnership to create communities in which people are proud to live and work.

We're passionate about creating a future where every neighbourhood is vibrant and green, every community is strong and able to shape its own destiny and no-one is held back by their background or circumstances.

We help people gain confidence and skills, get into training and work, protect and improve green spaces, lead more active lives and overcome significant challenges such as poverty, isolation, low skills and poor health.

Our Trustees are at the centre of our governance structure, working alongside our Executive Director and the Senior Management Team, to steer the organisation in achieving its charitable aims, and setting its on-going strategic objectives.

They are supported by volunteers who participate in the Board's sub-committees.

About you
We are seeking new Trustees who are passionate about Yorkshire, and more specifically about the areas where we work.

We have significant programmes in Leeds, Bradford, Wakefield, Selby and Hull, and we are looking for people who want to help us develop our work in these areas.

We are looking for Trustees and volunteers who have the energy, time and commitment to play a full role in our governance, by volunteering their time to support the work of the charity.

We are also seeking volunteers to join the Board's sub-committees, and those who have the skills and experience to take on leadership roles within our governance structure.

The minimum time commitment is six to eight meetings per year; allowing around half a day per meeting. Trustees are appointed for a term of three years, with potential to extend for a further three years. Ideally, volunteers will serve terms of a similar length.

By volunteering to join the Board of Groundwork Yorkshire or one of its sub-committees, Trustees and volunteers will help us to transform local places and the lives of local people.

We are looking for people who care about their neighbourhoods and communities, and who want to help us make a difference.

We are seeking Trustees and volunteers who are interested in or knowledgeable about the work we do.

We particularly interested in hearing from people who have worked in, or who can show an interest in, one of the following areas:

  • Improving people's prospects increasing the confidence, skills, wellbeing and employability of those struggling in education or out of work.
  • Creating better places making communities greener, safer and healthier and by enabling people to work together to bring about change in their local area.
  • Promoting greener living and working helping people and businesses reduce their environmental impact, improve their health, cut waste and save money.
We are also looking for people with skills and professional experience to support the following sub-committees:

  • Finance Committee
  • we are looking for skills in accountancy, audit & risk management;
  • Human Resources Committee we are looking for people with experience of manging or delivering an HR function;
  • Governance and Compliance Committee, including charity law, Health & Safety, Safeguarding, EDI and Information Management. We are looking for people with expertise in these areas, to act as Board Champions, and to act as the liaison between the Board and the staff team;
  • Business Development Committee. We are looking for expertise in service development (particularly in a charity of a similar size to Groundwork), public sector and health sector procurement and fundraising.

We are a friendly and welcoming board in need of some new perspectives and diverse voices around the table to help us continue to Change Lives and Change Places with those who need it most.

Want to apply?
Great.

Please send us your CV with a 1 page supporting statement that outlines the skills, knowledge, lived experience or passion you would bring to our Board and Committees.

If you're not sure if you're ready to take on the full responsibility of becoming a Trustee, please submit your CV anyway - we have opportunities on our Board sub-committees that may be of interest to you.
