The role of the bereavement officer is to supportfamilies who have been recently bereaved whilst ensuring that the Medical Cause of Death certificates are issued as early as possible to avoid untimely delays within the service.


The bereavement officer must be able to communicate and work effectively with a variety of people including bereaved relatives, all grades of doctors and hospital staff, Coronial officers and funeral directors.


The role frequently involves the processing of sensitive and emotional information, often liaising withclerical and medical staff, deceased patients' relatives, and other outside agencies including the Coroners Office, Medical Examiners, General Practitioners, Tracing agents and Registrars of Births/Deaths.

A vacancy has arisen for an empathetic, organized and motivated individual to join our bereavement team.


The bereavement offices at University Hospital Sussex East are based on two sites, Royal Sussex County Hospital Brighton and Princes Royal Hospital Haywards Heath.


The bereavement office at Brighton is comprised of three bereavement officers who are responsible for dealing with the with the deceased and their relatives from this Royal Sussex site.


The bereavement officer at Haywards Heath will work alone dealing with the deceased and their relatives from the Princess Royal site.
