We are looking for a motivated individual with previous experience in Residential or Secure settings to work with us as De-escalation and Behaviour Support.


Roles and Responsibilities

  • To be a first 'port of call' in case of behavioural escalation, to support with deescalation and intervention (including physical use of positive handling when required), and creating and promoting long term solutionfocused approaches to reducing incidents of challenging behaviour.
  • To work as part of a larger team to provide vulnerable learners with highquality alternative education through intervention (academic, behavioural, pastoral) as part of timetabled sessions.
  • To receive direction and deliver interventions/ sessions as required.
  • To plan, deliver, and report on requested interventions, including onthespot when necessary, to support our vulnerable learners.
  • To engage in further training to constantly develop skills and knowledge in trauma informed practice and minimising incidents of challenging behaviour, and to train/ mentor others in these areas if required.
  • To develop and maintain positive relationships with young people and their families.
  • To keep the teaching spaces clean and tidy, wellresourced, and conducive to learning.
  • To ensure classroom and wall displays are kept tidy and up to date.
  • To abide by risk assessments for children in your care, including ensuring teaching areas are kept clean and tidy and any resources are kept locked away.
  • To demonstrate patience and calm even during times of challenging behaviour.
  • To liaise with schools and other external agencies if appropriate.
  • To immediately inform management of any safeguarding or health and safety issues.
  • To foster supportive and trusting relationships with the children, parents/guardians, schools, and any other involved agencies.
  • To ensure confidentiality is respected at all times.
  • To follow all policy and procedure.
Previous experience working with children with challenging behaviour and/ or SEN is essential. Experience in Residential/ Secure settings is preferred. Qualified teacher status is not essential.


Our priority is finding the right staff member who is able to build positive relationships with our children, who is able to deal confidently and calmly with incidents of challenging behaviour, and who is able to complete Positive Handling training and use this confidently if required.

The staff member must be open to taking on professional development opportunities.

Working hours:

Monday to Friday, 35 hours per week, 9-4

Term time only, plus 3 days during the school holidays (spread across the year)


You may be working at any of our sites (currently based in Ashington and Stannington), or supporting with off-site visits.

This is an Award scheme unique to our setting which allows staff to work their way up towards their career goals through hands-on experience and qualifications.

This role involves working directly with children who may display challenging behaviour. Confidence in behaviour management is a requirement of this role.
