Job Overview

As a Matron in Medicine, every day presents a unique opportunity to positively impact our patients, colleagues, and community. We are seeking a dynamic individual to join the Medical Division at Lancashire Teaching Hospital. This role will primarily be based at the Preston site with occasional coverage at Chorley as required, to support the team on a secondment for 4 months.

Reporting to the Divisional Nurse Director and Deputy, you will play a key role in providing managerial and professional support to nursing staff, ensuring smooth operations in wards and departments to deliver excellent clinical care and meet national performance metrics.

Main Duties of the Job

As a Matron, you will collaborate closely with the Speciality Business Manager and Clinical Director to oversee all aspects of clinical care, focusing on patient safety, experience, and quality assurance frameworks.

This role requires a compassionate approach to patient care, strong leadership in Medicine, excellent communication skills, and organizational abilities.

Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities

The Modern Matron is accountable for providing professional leadership and guidance to nursing and care staff, ensuring the delivery of exceptional care with compassion. Responsibilities include:

  • Ensuring adequate resourcing and organization of nursing and care support teams.
  • Supporting staff and services to deliver exceptional care in alignment with organizational values and standards.
  • Leading staff development and being a role model for clinical and managerial leadership.
  • Developing clinical services in accordance with national policies and patient care needs.
  • Contributing to safety, quality, and clinical governance priorities.
  • Ensuring high standards of clinical care, cleanliness, and organization.
  • Participating in site management duties across the trust.

Essential Criteria

  • Appropriate Professional Registration
  • Degree within healthcare/research
  • 1st Line management/leadership development course
  • Teaching and Assessing qualification
  • Evidence of Continuous Professional Development

  • Study of nursing at an advanced academic level

  • Substantial and relevant post-registration experience
  • Experience in senior nursing roles and leadership
