Flexibility will be required within the contracted 37.5 hours per week in accordance with Agenda for Change Terms and Conditions.

Working Hours will be between 8am-8pm Mon

To supervise and organise a team of Medical Laboratory Assistants (MLA's) in Specimen Reception to provide an efficient and effective pre and post analytical service to the Blood Science laboratories, in accordance with the training and operational requirements of the department.


To lead and assist in the receipt, verification and preparation of patient samples, data entry of patient and specimen details onto the Pathology IT system as well as processing stock and consumable requests from service users.

Main duties by factor:

Communications and Relationship skills - (Factor 1)

  • To liaise between laboratory staff, patients and users of the service and deal with telephone enquiries from users, patients and other members of staff, seeking specialist staff advice where required.
  • To attend departmental meetings including participation in safety huddles
  • Communicate information within the Specimen Reception team to ensure the continual and efficient running of the Pathology Support Services and Blood Science.
Analytical and Judgemental skills - (Factor 3)

  • Concentrate for prolonged periods of time on mentally demanding and repetitive procedures which require high levels of attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Receive and sort pathological specimens received from the hospital and GP's in the Pathology catchment area, in a safe and timely manner.
  • Check and verify request forms and specimen details, assign a unique identification number to the request form and samples, recording those that do not meet identification criteria.
  • Load and unload specimens onto analytical instruments under the direction and supervision of competent laboratory staff, Biomedical Scientists and Managers.
  • Process, package and dispatch specimens to external reference laboratories.
  • Monitor fridge, freezer and cold room temperatures on a daily basis.
  • Prepare bulk reagents for analysers and dispose of laboratory waste accordingly.
  • Assist with the reporting of specific assays as required.
  • Archive and retrieve specimens using the laboratory specimen management system.
  • Undertake duties that are consistent with the responsibility of the roles and needs of the service, including internal job rotation and absence cover in other areas of Pathology.
  • Perform basic troubleshooting in line with established protocols and report any faults to Patient & Specimen Reception Manager and/or a Biomedical Scientist.
Planning and Organisational skills - (Factor 4)

  • To work in accordance with Departmental Policy and Standard Operating Procedures
  • To receive, distribute and prepare patient specimens for diagnostic laboratory testing
  • To provide supervision and organisation to the MLAs within the Specimen Reception team
  • Sort and distribute confidential patient results to our service users and process incoming and outgoing mail.
  • In the absence of the Patient & Specimen Reception Manager to escalate staffing deficiencies in Specimen Reception to senior staff and rectifying these issues where appropriate.
