Required to fill three new posts within the Acute Medicine Department at St James's University Hospital.

With our brand new purpose-built SDEC unit that opened in December 2023, this is an exciting time to join our expanding team in Leeds. We are looking to embed innovative ways of working to shape the future model of acute medicine in Leeds. Our new SDEC unit is co-located at SJUH with our Emergency Department (ED), maximising review by the right person in the right place first time, improving patient and staff satisfaction and enabling admission avoidance.

We are looking for enthusiastic, motivated and committed individuals to join our team of 10 Acute Medicine consultants and work within the Urgent Care CSU to drive forward our Acute Medicine & SDEC services. We have two Acute Medical Units with a total of 57 beds and a co-located 3 bedded Enhanced Care Area, called HOBS (High Observation Area). We have a strong commitment to the delivery of same day emergency care which operates a 7 day service and sees approximately 300 patients per week, as well as delivering an excellent and established ambulatory VTE service.

The Trust has a strong track record in teaching and in research, candidates with interests in these areas will be supported to continue this work.

Main duties of the job

Applicants should possess a wide experience in Acute and General Medicine and have excellent team-working skills. We are exceptionally well supported by a growing workforce of 18 Advanced Clinical Practitioners within acute medicine and candidates should enjoy the opportunities of working within a multi-disciplinary team of doctors, nurses and ACPs to deliver high quality care. Successful applicants will work in all 3 areas of acute medicine (AMU, Enhanced Care and Same Day Emergency Care) and will contribute to the out of hours rota (currently 1 in 10).You should possess MRCP (or equivalent) and should be included on the Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT at the time of interview, if currently within a training programme within the UK. In accordance with the consultant appointment regulations, all other categories of doctors must be on the Specialist Register. The Trust is committed to providing sustainable consultant-delivered services to ensure the quality of the patient experience. Working patterns that provide senior cover throughout 24 hours per day, seven days per week will therefore be required. Successful candidates will be expected to work with the Trust and its consultant staff to deliver service patterns and job plans that meet this objective. Applicants should have established skills in Acute Medicine. A strong commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and a research interest is desirable.

Job responsibilities

To ensure high quality and safe care of acute medical patients resulting in excellent clinical outcomes.

To contribute to the improvement of the acute medical service by developing admission avoidance and ambulatory care pathways.

To contribute to the care of patients on the acute medical floor and the new same day emergency care unit, extending the acute medicine consultant presence across these areas.

Consultant delivered post take wards rounds take place 7 days a week and are an integral part of the acute medicine consultant role.

To contribute to the out-of-hours provision of acute medicine on a rota alongside consultant colleagues from diabetes & endocrinology and respiratory medicine.

To show clinical leadership in patient care, service development and clinical governance.

To work co-operatively and effectively as part of the wider acute medicine team, being held to account for clinical, service development and training outcomes.

To contribute to the education and training of staff from a variety of disciplines, particularly in the management of acute illness.

To work closely with the colleagues in related clinical areas, in particular the emergency department, other medical and acute surgical specialties and with colleagues in primary care and those at the interface e.g. the primary care access line team.

These posts have been developed specifically to work on pathways of care which avoid the need for admission to hospital, and where admission occurs to ensure that early discharge to an ambulatory form of care.

Qualifications
Essential

MRCP or equivalent qualification. Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold a current licence to practice. YOU MUST STATE YOUR GMC NUMBER ON YOUR APPLICATION FORM TO BE CONSIDERED FOR SHORTLISTING. Eligibility to work in the UK. Is up to date and fit to practise safely.

Experience
Essential

Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in Acute and General Medicine. Specifically, must demonstrate higher specialist training in Acute Medicine. Evidence of continuous career progression consistent with personal circumstances.

Training, Research, Teaching & Audit
Essential

Should have completed a recognised training programme in Acute Medicine. Evidence of the ability to carry out medical research. Experience in training undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors. Experience of participation in regular clinical audit.

Desirable

Previous experience of supervising research by junior staff. Previous attendance on Appraisal Techniques and Small Group Teaching Workshops.
