This is a Trainee Clinical Scientist position in which some theoretical and practical knowledge of Transplant Immunology and Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (H&I) would be an advantage.

The post-holder will register for the British Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (BSHI) Diploma to achieve HCPC registration as a Clinical Scientist in H&l.

Following appropriate training, under supervision, the post-holder will be required to participate in the 24 hour emergency on-call rota for the supra-regional solid organ transplantation programme.


  • Perform routine laboratory tasks.
  • HLA genotyping.
  • HLA antibody screening.
  • Laboratory crossmatching for transplantation.
  • Participate in the training and joining the rota for the emergency outofhours situations.


The Oxford Transplant Centre currently provides kidney, pancreas, intestinal, modified multivisceral and islet cell transplant services and is part of the National Organ Retrieval Service for all abdominal organs.

The Centre also provides other surgery to support patients at the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (OUH).


The Transplant Immunology and Immunogenetics Laboratory provides consultant-led specialist regional services for clinical transplantation within the Oxford Transplant Centre and haematopoietic stem cell transplants performed within the OUH.

These services include HLA typing to the DNA sequence level, HLA antibody screening and specification and crossmatching. The laboratory provides a 24-hour on-call service for transplantation and post-transplant monitoring. Immunogenetics services are also offered to clinicians to define disease susceptibility genes to aid patient diagnosis and treatment. The laboratory is accredited by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) and European Federation for Immunogenetics (EFI). Referrals are received from within the OUH and externally from Primary Care Trusts and other Trusts and Institutions.
Trainee ClinicalScientist in Transplant Immunology and Immunogenetics

Purpose:

This is a Trainee Clinical Scientist position in which some theoretical and practical knowledge of Transplant Immunology and Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (H&I) would be an advantage.

The post-holder will register for the British Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (BSHI) Diploma to achieve HCPC registration as a Clinical Scientist in H&l.

The post-holder is required to participate in laboratory meetings and attend local seminar programs and will ensure continuing professional development (CPD).

Under supervision, the post-holder will be required to participate in the 24 hour emergency on-call rota for the supra-regional solid organ transplantation programme.


Qualifications/Experience:

The post holder is required to have a relevant BSc Hons./Biomedical Sciences degree and practical laboratory experience.

The post holder will participate in an appropriate CPD scheme and maintain the required level of attainment.

Responsibilities:

  • Uses Laboratory computer systems for recording patient specimens.
  • Performs all sample processing procedures required in the laboratory.
  • Performs antibody screening and specification.
  • Performs laboratory crossmatching for deceased and living donor transplantation.
  • Performs genotyping using molecular methodologies.
  • Accurately enters patient test results into the hospital, regional and national computer systems.
  • Participates in internal and external quality assurance schemes.
  • Monitors consumables and equipment to ensure adequate laboratory function.
  • Undertakes equipment revalidation and testing.
  • Monitors own day-to-day performance.
  • Under supervision, undertakes emergency out-of-hours on-call duties for solid organ and islet transplantation. This involves the assimilation of highly complicated sets of data that are unique on each occasion, interpreting complex results and advising the Consultant Surgeon on the risks of transplant rejection specific to the particular patient.
  • Flexible with working hours and participate in the 24/7 on-call rota.
  • Must be able to arrive at the laboratory within 1 hour of notification at any time whilst on-call.
  • Once appropriately trained, liaises and communicates with a range of clinical and non-clinical staff in and out of regular working hours both locally and nationally.
  • Participates in general public open days.

Administrative and general duties:

  • The post holder is responsible for ensuring that all duties are carried out to the highest possible standard and following current quality initiatives and Standard Operating Procedures within the area of work.
