NUCLEAR ENGINEER

  • 6 months

- £60.00 to £70.00 per hour


As a key member of our engineering team, you'll tackle diverse and stimulating tasks such as performing and verifying calculations, creating technical documentation, and supporting project bids following our or our clients' quality assurance procedures.


Responsibilities include actively backing technical aspects of project completion, like forecasting, change and risk management, and reporting on project advancements.

Your role involves fostering client trust in Atkins' technical proficiency through your professionalism and diligence.


In addition, you'll contribute to developing, executing, and disseminating best practices among the engineering community and our formal documentation systems.


  • A solid background in Mechanical Engineering principles and their application in the nuclear sector is essential, along with a proven history of delivering technical solutions. Safety and security must be top priorities for you.
  • You should have experience in developing designs and calculations to prove performance viability and drafting critical technical documents. Adapting to new and evolving settings should be comfortable for you, and you should be eager to tackle challenges and help boost business success.
  • Effectively communicating and influencing stakeholders at all levels, both internally and externally, should be second nature to you. Also, you should have a strong record of working efficiently as part of a project team.
  • Supporting our Quality Assurance process by reviewing or verifying colleagues' work and presenting your own findings to clients should be routine for you. Your background should cover the entire project life cycle, with hands-on experience applying various engineering principles and skills to achieve successful project outcomes. This includes dealing with technical hurdles and taking direct responsibility for the quality and technical performance of engineering projects.

You should be able to demonstrate the following:

  • A degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • Working towards or having achieved Chartered Engineer status
  • Prior experience in nuclear engineering (design, analysis, technical validation).
  • History of delivering technical projects and services.
  • Knowledge of the nuclear industry and safety regulations.
  • Familiarity with working according to design codes and industry standards pertinent to safety-critical sectors (e.g., ASME, Eurocodes, BS EN13001, RCC-M, etc.).
  • Handling high-integrity mechanical equipment (e.g., Nuclear de-fuelling/fuelling/waste maneuvering, etc.).
  • Ensuring technically compliant design outputs in line with specified requirements.
  • Producing and verifying designs and calculations to ensure performance acceptability and identify design concerns.
  • Creating essential technical documentation such as Calculations, Design reports, etc.
