Job description
  • In this role you will protect and enhance the Environment Agency's reputation with Ministers, Parliament, and key national stakeholders. You will be a part of the Government and External Relations Team that works on issues ranging from flood risk, climate change, environmental protection and regulation to water resources and quality. You will work flexibly across the organisation, respond to work pressures and help deliver the priorities of our fiveyear business plan, EA2025.

You may lead on the following:
- support our work with Ministers, politicians, and key stakeholders.
- maintain relationships with key departmental teams, including Defra, and develop effective relationships with contacts in influential organisations.
- provide expert advice on political and strategic stakeholder handling to our Chair, Chief Executive, senior leaders, and the organisation.
- lead on the preparations for the Environment Agency's input to select committee inquiries and engagement with Parliament.
- support local engagement with elected representatives and plan national engagement campaigns.
- maintain and develop positive relationships with internal and external contacts for sharing advice and intelligence.
- keep the organisation updated on relevant political activity, parliamentary processes, and stakeholder sentiment.
- play an active role in incident response.

This role will include line management.

  • The Government & External Relations Team is a friendly team that is welcoming to all and celebrates diversity. We work collaboratively to solve problems and create opportunities. The work is highprofile and fastpaced. We lead on the Environment Agency's input to parliamentary processes, ensure Ministers have timely and accurate briefings and oversee engagement with strategic stakeholders. We work with senior leaders and colleagues to enhance the organisation's reputation with government, Parliament, and influential stakeholders.
  • Experience/skills required
  • Good political judgment and awareness.
  • A good understanding of parliamentary and government processes.
  • Experience in delivering and advising on strategic engagement activities and campaigns. Experience in delivering engagement events is desirable.
  • The ability to work closely with senior managers and foster a network of contacts, building rapport and relationships quickly.
  • A flexible approach and the ability to deliver high quality work to tight deadlines and work well under pressure, knowing when to refer to colleagues for guidance and support.
  • Excellent written and verbal skills.
  • An attention to detail and capable of presenting information in a clear style and format.
  • A good understanding of the UK's environmental policy, the public sector and key organisations in the environmental sector is desirable.
  • Contact and additional informationIn this role you may be required to be part of a duty rota which supports the senior management team during incidents. Occasionally this includes out of hours working.

This role may work from our Marsham Street office in London and therefore require an enhanced level of security check, a key component of which is a minimum of 3 years UK residency.

This role is eligible for inner London weighting (£3,889 per annum). There is potential for the role to become permanent.
