Job summary

We are looking for a talented and experienced pharmacist to provide clinical leadership for our pharmacy service. As our lead pharmacist for Cancer Services, you will set the strategy and the tone for our clinical cancer service, ensuring the continued provision and ongoing development of high quality, patient-centered care.

We are looking for someone with a proven track record for delivering safe and effective care in hospital pharmacy services. You will need a clear vision for developing existing clinical pharmacy services, and developing new and innovative services to meet the needs of our patients. You will be able to demonstrate that you have the values and skills to provide effective, inspiring, and respectful leadership to the whole Pharmacy Team.

Applicantsmust be currently registered with the GPhC as a pharmacist and have extensive, demonstrable clinical pharmacy and leadership experience.

Depending on experience and performance at interview you may be offered an band 8a to band 8b progression plan in order to give you the experience to be able to operate as a band 8b pharmacist

Main duties of the job

Lead the Trust clinical pharmacy service for cancer services and clinical trials. Maintain a core clinical role as a specialist pharmacist in cancer services (haematology and oncology), including independent prescribing

Leadership of the clinical pharmacy team, acting as a role-model for exceptional clinical pharmacy service delivery

Be a core member of the Pharmacy Senior Leadership TeamResponsibility, in partnership with the Lead Clinical Pharmacist, for the delivery, management, and development of all clinical pharmacy and medicines optimisation services for the Trust

Job responsibilities

To provide expert clinical pharmacy input, advice, and knowledge in the area of oncology and haematology, providing highly specialist advice to consultants, junior doctors, nursing, and pharmacy staff.

To work in partnership with the Lead Clinical Pharmacist to plan the future development and progress of clinical pharmacy services and medicines optimisation services to the Trust, particularly in light of national and regional directives and guidance, in liaison with the Senior Leadership Team.

To act as pharmacy lead for genomic medicine.

To lead in the development of medicines optimisation initiatives in Cancer including pharmacy-led ward rounds and pharmacist independent prescriber clinics.

To monitor the level and standard of professional work undertaken by clinical pharmacy staff in accordance with local KPIs and national competency frameworks.

To develop clinical pharmacy services which are targeted at all domains of medicines optimisation, maximising use of patients own drugs, completing medicines reconciliation, focused on discharge and ensuring adherence to policies around safe prescribing and administration.

To contribute to pharmacy workforce planning including NHS long-term plan future-proofing and ensuring innovative service implement the monitoring and integration of written clinical pharmacy policies/guidelines. To contribute to the delivery of medicines-related CQuINs within the scope of the role.

To clinically screen prescriptions and influence treatment options to ensure compliance with medicines legislation and mitigate risk of harm from medicines. This includes accreditation to validate cancer chemotherapy prescriptions on the cancer e-Prescribing system, and GCP accreditation to validate/ check clinical trial prescriptions.

To review and interpret complex literature and present this at The Medicines Committee

To provide professional and clinical advice to the multidisciplinary healthcare team, patients and carers, to support individual patient care and medicines optimisation

Person Specification

Education

Essential

GPhC registration as a pharmacist Post graduate Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy or equivalent Independent prescriber (or working towards)

Desirable

Management and leadership qualification MSc or equivalent postgraduate qualification in Clinical Pharmacy or other appropriate discipline Practice Supervisor Accreditation or equivalent teaching accreditation

Knowledge and Skills

Essential

Excellent communication skills Excellent interpersonal, including influencing skills and people management skills. Ability to prioritise work effectively Ability to lead and motivate others Advanced knowledge of cancer medicines Broad pharmaceutical knowledge relating to general medicine and core medical specialities Demonstrates knowledge of national and local guidelines relating to specialism that need to be adhered to Knowledge of GCP Budgetary control skills
