Job summary

The Urology Centre at NGH opened in its current capacity in 2012 following a generous donation by Sir Alfred Staden.

We offer a number of Urological services to our patient cohort including diagnostics such as Cystometrograms, Urine Flowmetry, Flexible Cystoscopies and Local Anaesthetic template biopsies of the Prostate. We also hold surveillance clinics where we perform Flexible Cystoscopies and Local Anaesthetic template biopsies of the Prostate for patients with known diagnosis of Cancer to monitor the progression of their disease.

As a Junior Urology Practitioner in the Urology Centre, the post holder will be expected to work in collaboration with the other Junior Urology Practitioner for the department, but taking on greater responsibility for the management of staff. The post holder will be expected to lead on managing staffing including sickness absence management, allocations of staff across clinics, staff appraisal and developments and leading team meetings and daily huddles. This will be alongside clinical duties and will be under the close guidance of and with support from the Senior Sister for Integrated Surgery Outpatients and the Urology Centre.

Ensuring patients have a positive experience in the department

Setting up clinic rooms and the procedure room, ensuring they are clean and fully equipped with all the necessary equipment for that clinician.

Decontaminating equipment and clinical areas between patients.

Chaperoning and acting as a patient advocate when required.

Providing clear and concise verbal communication to other members of the Urology Centre team, patients, clients, and multidisciplinary teams

Attending to patients who attend the unit with queries or catheter problems

Delivering catheter care, educating patients on best practice for catheter care

Running tri-weekly Nurse led Trial Without Catheter and Catheter change clinics

Triaging Trial Without Catheter referrals via ICE and booking in TWOC clinics in conjunction with the Urology Centre clinic co-ordinator.

Contributing to continuous improvement in the Urology Centre

Triage and book Trial Without Catheters and Catheter Changes via ICE referrals

Completing pre-procedure checklists and admission documentation for patients attending for Flexible Cystoscopies and Local Anaesthetic template biopsies of the Prostate.

Providing pastoral support to patients during procedure

In conjunction with fellow Junior Sister, chair team meetings and lead on daily morning huddles.

Work closely with the Clinic Co-ordinator for the Urology Centre to ensure accuracy of clinic lists.

Ensure clarity in communicating with patients/clients and their relatives as well as other team members and in answering questions within the sphere of ones own knowledge.

Contribute to the on-going support of patients/clients and others significant to them, enabling patients/clients to maintain their interests, identity, and emotional well-being.

Welcome patients/clients, their families, and other visitors to the department. Introduce them to the facilities and services provided.

Answer the telephone in a clear, friendly, helpful, and professional manner. Take any Messages accurately and endeavour to respond in a timely manner to patient queries.

Demonstrate a caring approach to patients/clients, their families, and visitors and to have good verbal and non-verbal communication skills.

To be courteous and helpful to patients, families/carers, colleagues and all users to the trust.

To undertake return to work interviews and manage the sickness absence of Nursing staff in the department.

To perform annual/ bi-annual appraisals for Nursing staff, encouraging their professional development and providing constructive feedback on their performance.

At all times to adhere to statutory, mandatory, Trust guidance and the Code of Conduct for Healthcare Support Workers and Adult Social Care Workers in England Adopted and adapted for use at NGH January 2014.

Maintain own statutory, mandatory training, and divisional/directorate specific essential training.
