Role

The Mental Health Practitioners (MHP) initiative aims to expand mental health and wellbeing support in government schools. The initiative ensures a qualified mental health professional in all government secondary school campuses and specialist school settings.

Employed in collaboration with the Department of Education Regional Mental Health Branch, this role involves:

  • Enhancing mental health prevention and promotion activities at the school by contributing to health and wellbeing plans, empowering teaching staff and school leadership to address student mental health matters, and assisting in the development and delivery of programs and strategies based on school priorities.
  • Providing early intervention services, including short-term counseling, for at-risk individual students and groups showing mild to moderate mental health concerns.
  • Coordinating support for students with complex needs within and outside the school, working with regions, local mental health services, and healthcare professionals for additional support.

Education support class level 1 range 4

The ideal candidate will be an experienced professional performing duties with a high level of autonomy and minimal supervision. Responsibilities include developing and implementing support programs in an educational environment and guiding other professional staff.

This role supports educational services for students, excluding teaching duties as outlined in the Education and Training Reform Act 2006 (Vic).

Responsibilities

  • Offering advice and professional learning to teachers and school staff to enhance student wellbeing and learning outcomes.
  • Providing professional support and early intervention services for students with various mental health needs.
  • Planning and implementing intervention strategies for students with complex needs in collaboration with families and professionals.
  • Working with the school to enhance mental health promotion by contributing to policies and practices guiding the work of other staff.
  • Collaborating with other department areas and external service providers to offer appropriate student support.
  • Maintaining professional competence through ongoing development activities.
  • Meeting policies and legislative requirements regarding student health information, privacy, and consent.

Who May Apply

Required:

  • Qualified as a psychologist, social worker, mental health nurse, occupational therapist, or counselor of a specified class.
  • Demonstrated counseling experience.
  • Current Working With Children Check.

Desirable:

  • Specialization in educational and/or developmental psychology for Psychology applicants.
  • Mental Health Nurse applicants holding a Mental Health Nurse Credential and membership with the Australian College of Mental Health Nurses.
  • Social Work applicants with membership in the Australian Association of Social Workers and an Accredited Social Worker Trade Mark.
  • Occupational Therapy applicants with a Better Access to Mental Health Endorsement.
  • Counseling applicants with Level 3-4 registration (ACA) or a Registered Clinical Counselor endorsement (PACFA).
