More about the role

As an Instrumentation Field Service Engineer, you'll gain expertise in installing, repairing, and maintaining our process instrumentation, control, and automation systems. It's vital to ensure our water assets are functional, ensuring services run smoothly for our customers.

Throughout your 48-month apprenticeship, you'll hone valuable engineering skills as you learn to install, repair, and maintain our instrumentation systems, playing a crucial role in our water sites.

You'll be fully immersed in the water industry, so being eager to learn and comprehend how we provide clean water is essential.

Successful apprentices will accomplish a Utilities Engineering Technician level 3, endorsed by the Institute for Apprenticeships.

Skills you'll acquire during your apprenticeship:

  • Working as part of a committed team focused on maximizing our plant operations' efficiency.
  • Dealing with a wide range of equipment, identifying faults, and conducting routine maintenance following strict health and safety standards.
  • Learning about scheduled maintenance tasks and efficiently organizing your workload.

You'll have a dedicated mentor and manager supporting you at every stage. We only ask for your willingness to learn, teamwork skills, and effective time management to accomplish tasks.

Applicants must possess 5 GCSEs or equivalent, grades A-C or grades 9-4, including Maths, English, and a Science or Technology subject.

Additional details

During the first year, you'll spend 8 months at the Bolton Technical Training Centre from Monday to Friday. United Utilities will provide accommodation if you're from outside the area during this period, excluding weekends.

Upon completing your apprenticeship, you'll be added to a formal standby roster, possibly requiring out-of-hours work. Rest assured, your training will prepare you for this situation. We recommend applying for vacancies near you for quick site access during standby periods.
