About Wildlife Photographer of the Year (WPY)

Owned by the Natural History Museum, Wildlife Photographer of the Year is the most prestigious competition of its kind, showcasing the world's best nature photography and photojournalism on a global platform.

Contextualised and empowered by Museum science, WPY images tell remarkable stories that spark emotive reactions and have the power to transform our relationship with the natural world.

The competition and exhibition play a pivotal role in the Museum's mission to create advocates for the planet.

This role involves creating and delivering a comprehensive communications strategy to build and protect the global Wildlife Photographer of the Year brand.

This includes the renowned competition, flagship exhibition at the Museum, both national and international tour, outreach programme and other key international partnerships and events.

WPY celebrates and amplifies the power of photography, moving hearts and minds to spark change.

Now in its sixtieth year, the competition continues to push the boundaries of nature photography and to challenge the ways we understand our relationship with the natural world.

You will build the profile of the WPY brand and its global community, drive entries to the competition and attract visitors to the annual exhibition.

You will help shape WPY's story, making sure we tell it clearly and consistently across multiple channels in alignment with the Museum's mission and vision, reinforcing the Museum's ownership and delivery of the programme.

A talented self-starter, you will have excellent communication skills and be able to establish key relationships quickly.

You will be working in a fast-paced and varied environment and play a crucial role in shifting perceptions of the Museum.

Develop, implement and evaluate a creative and high impact PR campaign combining media relations and social media to promote the annual WPY competition, the launch of the flagship exhibition at the Museum, call for entries and the People's Choice campaign.

~ Build the WPY brand internationally advising on WPY presence at major external and sector-wide events e.g. COP, Davos, photography festivals, conferences and outreach programmes such as the WPY Academy.

~ Responsibility for delivering the WPY social media strategy including planning, content creation, monitoring and influencer work to develop the global WPY community in-keeping with the programme's strategic aims.

~ A valued member of the WPY Project Board you are responsible for protecting the reputation of WPY as a brand, particularly across media and social media, using your breath of experience to identify and negate issues with timely responses to enquires.

~ Manage a content plan , and working with the Media & PR Team Assistant, develop content including copy, imagery and video that can be used daily across WPY channels

~ Lead the communications campaign for the Awards ceremony which is one of the event highlights of the year, not only for Museum but also the photographic industry

~ Develop and nurture excellent relationships with internal colleagues from Digital, Marketing and Publishing, and with journalists, responding quickly to requests, horizon-scanning, drafting high-quality press packs resulting in national and international coverage in popular outlets materials.

~ Line manage the Media & PR Team Assistant who will dedicate a portion of their time to supporting on WPY, set their objectives, manage their workload and develop their skills. Manage the work of freelancers, including preparing briefs and managing their performance.

Experience of leading the development and delivery of creative strategies from planning to evaluation that increase the profile of an established brand through media relations, social media and digital marketing

~ Experience working in a busy press office or PR agency environment on behalf of high-profile consumer-facing brands

~ Experience of creating and managing social media output and developing communities for a consumer brand,including reputation management

~ Ability to work well under pressure, prioritise effectively and respond to tight deadlines, across multiple projects

~ Flexible and positive attitude, with the desire to create new opportunities and think creatively about challenges

~ Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English, including the ability to write attention grabbing press releases, concise briefing notes, compelling speeches and comment pieces or blogs to positively influence stakeholders and audiences

~ The gravitas and sensitivity to act in an advisory role to senior management

~ Passion for the natural world, wildlife photography and the Museum's vision of a future where both people and the planet thrive
