The Neurofibromatoses (NF) are a group of genetic conditions which predispose to benign tumours of the nervous system. The birth frequency of neurofibromatosis type 2 is approximately 1 in 33,000 births. Type 2 Neurofibromatosis is a tumour predisposing genetic disorder characterised by bilateral vestibular schwannomas.

The onset of symptoms is most commonly between 18 and 24 years and often presents with symptoms of vestibular schwannoma:
hearing loss, tinnitus and balance dysfunction.

Other than in the mosaic form the gene that causes type 2 Neurofibromatosis has 100% penetrance and almost all affected people develop bilateral vestibular schwannomas by the age of 30 years.

Affected individuals may also develop schwannomas of other cranial, spinal and peripheral nerves, meningiomas and ependymomas. Some patients develop peripheral neuropathy and have visual impairment from childhood due to cataracts or retinal hamartomas.

Successful management of patients with type 2 neurofibromatosis requires a dedicated multi-disciplinary approach that focuses on the need to preserve function.

Many patients develop significant disability in the forms of hearing loss and deafness, balance dysfunction and neuropathies

The multidisciplinary team is made up of professionals in the following specialties:
Adult and paediatric neurology
Neurosurgery
Genetics
