Job Summary:

The post holder ensures that all patients, within the Radiotherapy service, are provided with the highest standard of care and comfort attainable.

The post holder supports the clinical delivery of Radiotherapy treatment, by giving patient-related and administrative support to the Radiographers.

The post holder liaises with medical, physics, nursing, clerical and support staff within the department, and throughout the institution, to ensure optimum patient care.


Key Responsibilities:

Clinical Practice Provide a high standard of support and care to the patient through all stages of the radiotherapy process.

Act as chaperone for the patient as required. Assist with patient and heavy equipment movement and transfer, taking into account the local policies for manual handling.

Prepare the clinical area for each individual procedure, including examination, treatment, simulation or CT scan, ensuring that all necessary equipment has been identified and provided.

Perform patient dressings, using aseptic techniques.

Maintain a clean and safe environment for patients. Management & Organisational Role Participate in department projects, including audit and quality initiatives pertinent to the role.

Ensure that all notes, test results and x-rays/scans are collated prior to the patient attending for Radiotherapy planning or treatment review appointments.

Report, document and act on untoward incidents.


Assist in clinical areas within the Trust as the clinical situation or staffing levels require, being responsible for maintaining and restocking stock levels of pharmacy supplies.

Assist in non clinical areas of the department ensuring the Radiotherapy administrative functions are completed effectively and efficiently at all times.

Registration of radiotherapy referrals onto ARIA, informing patients of appointments and send out relevant information packs to them. Be able to undertake general administration within patient management systems including Minestrone, ARIA and PAS.

Be able to book hospital transport for patients and interpreters when required. Communication & Working Relations Obtain, record and report information onto systems in written and electronic format.

As part of the team, contribute to the delivery of individualised care, upholding the philosophy of care for the clinical area.

Demonstrate ability to communicate to a high level, in an understandable language, manage sensitive information and to deal with anxious cancer patients and their families, using exemplary diplomacy, overcoming barriers when necessary.


Provide patients with simple advice on directions to facilities within the department, and other departments within the Trust, act as escort, when necessary.

Working Conditions & Effort Frequently exposed to distressing circumstances e.g. the treatment and care of the terminally ill, and their families.

Regularly deal with aggressive pathologies and very unpleasant bodily fluids produced as a result of the specificity of the disease, or as a result of the treatment.
