Tullow Oil Plc is a well-established, recognised, and African focused independent oil and gas company. The Group has interests in over 30 exploration and production licences across 7 countries in Africa and South America.

Tullow has an exciting opportunity for a Legal Advisor. A member of Tullow's Legal Team based in Chiswick, London, providing legal support primarily to Tullow's Non-Operated Production and Exploration Business with scope to also work across Tullow's asset base and Group Corporate matters. Position reporting to the Associate General Counsel.

This is a permanent role based in Chiswick, London with hybrid working arrangements.

Job Purpose/Requirements

  • Able to effectively manage relationships with clients, other functions and external stakeholders.
  • Will be provided with support / supervision from senior lawyers to develop knowledge/understanding of other relevant functions and disciplines in order to work more effectively in an integrated team.
  • Strong personal commitment to and exponent of Tullow Values.
  • Takes responsibility to deliver work on time, to the required standard and with conclusions and recommendations clearly and succinctly presented.
  • Supports the team to assess ways to enhance Legal Function's performance and profile through know-how updates, training, shared learnings and suggestions to improve ways of working.

Responsibilities/Key Objectives

  • Lawyer on a wide range of matters of various degrees of complexity, managing them and routinely delivering advice with minimal supervision (though seeks supervision where appropriate).
  • Provide legal advice and support to Business Managers and relating to all legal aspects of Tullow's Non-Operated and Exploration Business currently based in Gabon, Cote D'Ivoire and Argentina, including compliance with all laws and regulations. Scope to also support the Decommissioning Business Unit and wider Tullow portfolio across Africa and South America and general corporate matters.
  • Advising on structuring, drafting, negotiating and reviewing ongoing compliance with various commercial agreements, and able to advise across Tullow's key legal practice areas.
  • Advising on engagement with partners under the joint ventures, Government or regulatory bodies / authorities, industry bodies, third party contractors and other legal-related and senior internal and external stakeholders.
  • Support on the management of external legal counsel as required.
  • Supporting the team on managing dispute resolution and litigation arising out of Tullow's activities.
  • Supports in progressing Legal Team initiatives.

Skills

  • Able to work to tight deadlines and deliver;
  • Able to provide legal advice on contractual and legislative/regulatory matters and ability to provide this in a succinct, pragmatic and commercially aware manner.
  • Sound drafting skills.
  • Ability to interpret, analyse laws, statutes and regulations and identify areas of potential risk.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to advise clients on complex matters.
  • Will develop skillset to be able to advise upon international upstream oil and gas supply chain, contractual and regulatory matters.
  • Overall, performs much of role under minimum supervision.
  • Demonstrates well-developed interpersonal skills with an ability to represent Tullow at external meetings.
  • Strong awareness of, and alignment to, the business goals of the Tullow Group.
  • Keeps line manager updated on developments and escalating issues where necessary.
  • Preferable competency/experience in drafting, negotiating and/or advising on two or more of the following practice areas: Operational Oil and Gas Supply Chain, general upstream matters, general commercial matters, Transactional Oil and Gas/Corporate M&A, Dispute Management, Corporate Finance, Co-Sec matters.

Education and Experience

  • University graduate and professionally qualified lawyer in UK.
  • 1-2 years post qualification, some knowledge of oil and gas / energy sector preferred, experience working as part of a goal-focused team in a commercial environment, with either a leading private practice firm or within an in-house legal department.
  • Experience of providing legal advice on contractual and legislative/regulatory matters.
  • French or Spanish language skills an advantage, including any relevant experience of advising on Francophone African legal matters.
