Job summary:


This challenging opportunity has become available in the Nuclear Weapons programme (NWP) that extends across various UK sites and Life Cycle Phases (LCP), from Aldermaston to HMNB Clyde and at sea during operational deployment.

IOW holds responsibility for the regulation of the operational phase of the NWP.

This results in direct, daily liaison with officers of 2 Authorisees; HMNB(Clyde) for LCP3 and CSSE for the deployed system in LCP4, who are responsible for delivering a safe NWP.

IOW regulates the nuclear & radiological safety of the NWP from arrival and processing in RNAD(Coulport) through transfer and installation of warheads on operational platforms to the deployment of the platform at sea during training or operations and conducting in-service maintenance at UK operational berths.

Through inspection and assessment, IOW gains assurance that NWP activities are compliant with the Authorisation Conditions and the authorisee's own processes and compliance statements.


This captivating new role will give you the ability to develop your skills within Nuclear Safety Regulation and general Nuclear Safety technical fields, focusing on the NWP, working closely with existing DNSR site inspectors and DSA and statutory regulators, whilst leading on your own areas of responsibility.

Job description:


You will form part of the DNSR Inspector OW team and will be the supporting the Inspector for the OW; carrying out inspection, assessment and permissioning activities to assure compliance with the Authorisation Conditions.

The Inspector, Operational Weapons (DSA-DNSR-IOW-a) will augmented and support the Principal Inspector (PI) (DSA-DNSR-IOW) as well as other DNSR Principal Inspectors.

DSA-DNSR-IOW-a will have delegated regulatory authority from the PI - IOW (DSA-DNSR-IRW)) for the following:

  • The granting or withholding of permission for activities in the NWP which present a nuclear or radiological risk.
  • Approve/agree nuclear safety submissions and safety management arrangements.
  • Offer formal regulatory advice and guidance to Authorisee's representatives.
  • Direct the postponement or cessation of specified activity if safety standards have been or are likely to be compromised to an unacceptable degree.
  • Assess the demonstration of nuclear emergency arrangements.
  • Seek assurance of compliance with the regulatory requirements.
  • Cooperate closely with relevant staff from other MOD and statutory regulators


This role will provide you with the chance to work on a wide range of nuclear projects over multiple Authorised Sites, directly influencing the DNE within all areas of the CADMID cycle.

You will also have significant opportunity to develop your skills within Nuclear Safety Regulation and general nuclear safety technical fields.


Your main responsibilities as DSA-DNSR-IOW-a will involve:

To regulate nuclear and radiological safety as specified in Letters of Delegated Regulatory Authority and in accordance with the DNSR Regulatory Management System.


  • Support to DSA-DNSRIOW in leading and influencing nuclear safety across the Authorised activities in support of the DNE, through providing regulatory advice and guidance to the Authorisee (NFC 1.1).
  • Conduct inspections of the Authorisees arrangements against defence regulations and support the Authorisee in demonstrating sustained compliance of safe nuclear operations (NFC 1.5).
  • To assist and provide briefs for other DNSR Principal Inspectors, NWR and DNSR Head as required (NFC 1.5).

Person specification:

  • HNC / Degree level qualification or equivalent in a STEM field or equivalent experience.
  • 12 months experience working within the Nuclear field or equivalent regulated industry.
