The Role


We seek to recruit an experienced Experimental Scientific Officer to support, develop and promote high quality histopathology and multiplexed tissue staining methods.

The post will underpin the critical work of the investigators within the Musculoskeletal and Inflammation Medicine Theme of the recently awarded NIHR Newcastle Biomedical Research Unit.

The person will be part of the well-stablished Flow Cytometry and Single Cell Core Facility (NU-FCCF) and work with cutting-edge multi-plexed imaging technologies such as the Hyperion from Standard Bio-tools and the

MACSima from Miltenyi Biotech.

You will actively collaborate with other core facilities such as the Bio-Imaging Unit, in particular the newly established Image Informatics platform in order to successfully deliver the aims and objectives of the role.


This role will require you to:
a) Work to deliver multiple projects from the Musculoskeletal and Inflammation Medicine Theme that require histopathological analysis and multiplexed imaging.

b) Develop and validate panels of antibodies to ask both hypothesis drive and hypothesis-free questions relating to cellular phenotype and function within musculoskeletal tissue samples (healthy and diseased).

c) Keep an accurate record of the antibodies that have been tested and validated as part of the BRC-funded "antibody-tissue database" held by the NU-FCCF.
d) Maintain a working knowledge of current and future histopathology and multiplexed imaging technologies across the faculty.
e) Advise from a technical and scientific perspective on experimental workflows, sample preparation and image capture requirements relating to multiplexed imaging techniques and technologies.

f) Play an active role in the newly established "Special Interest Group" (SIG) in Histopathology and Multiplexed Imaging via membership of the "Innovation, Methodology and Application" (IMA) research theme within the Faculty of Medical Sciences (FMS).

This role is fixed term for 2 years at 0.4FTE.

Key Accountabilities

  • To take a lead role in the planning, execution and delivery of all relevant projects that require histopathology and multiplexed imaging relating to the work of the Musculoskeletal and Inflammation Medicine Theme of the recently awarded NIHR Newcastle Biomedical Research Unit
  • Develop and validated/execute panels of antibodies to deliver the above aims
  • Perform as a service the above tasks
  • Work closely with existing FCCF staff that are working in the area of multiplexed tissue staining and analysis in order to provide some degree of "redundancy" in the relevant and highly sought after skills required
  • Advise from a histopathological and multiplexed tissue imaging perspective, experimental workflows, sample preparation and image capture requirements
  • Provide regular updates to project stakeholders as and when required in the form of presentations (lab meeting for example)
  • Contribute to the generation and interpretation of figures/data for publications, grants and presentations
  • Attend (where possible) regular lab meetings for both the Musculoskeletal and Inflammation Medicine Theme and the NU-FCCF
The Person (Essential)

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Have proven and direct experience of cutting, prepping and staining human tissues (fixed/frozen and or FFPE) for immunehistological analysis using antibodybased probes
  • Demonstrable experience and track record in Immunology and Rheumatology
  • Proficient in aspects of data analysis for multiplexed tissue imaging such as segmentation, data correction and data exploration (dimensionality reduction for visualisation and clustering approaches to determine cell type/state)
  • Experience in supporting and training others
  • Knowledgeable in all relevant aspects of laboratorybased Health and Safety

Qualifications:

  • PhD or substantial experience in histopathology and tissue staining, as well as direct experience using a multiplexed tissue imaging platform such as the Hyperion or MACSima (or equivalents) (Desirable)
