London, Greater London, United Kingdom AWE Full time

Join an Exciting Team at AWE as a Principal or Senior Quantum Computing Scientist

Are you ready to work alongside exceptional individuals on groundbreaking projects? What if the outcome was something truly unique and your role was crucial to the mission?

For over 70 years, AWE has been leading the way in research and development of nuclear weapons. Our core objective is to supply the warheads for the UK's primary deterrent - Trident. Additionally, we leverage our distinctive expertise to support the wider UK government in counter-terrorism and nuclear threat mitigation.

About the Job Title and the Company:

AWE is currently offering a fantastic opportunity for a Principal or Senior Quantum Computing Scientist to become part of our High-Performance Computing Group.

This role presents a chance to enhance and apply your quantum computing skills in a field of national significance. AWE boasts a significant and intricate scientific computing capacity, necessitating the adoption of Quantum Computing (QC) methodologies.

Located in Aldermaston, West Berkshire, between Reading and Basingstoke, with convenient on-site parking, this position requires on-site presence but provides flexibility for a hybrid working model.

Package:

  • Senior QC Scientist: £46,130 to £55,000
  • Principal QC Scientist: £59,960 to £75,000
  • Compensation is based on suitability, qualifications, and experience levels.

This role may offer a relocation package, subject to specific terms and conditions.

About the Role:

In this position, you will become an AWE authority in one or more QC domains, leading their evolution and the integration of emerging quantum algorithms. Collaborating with academic partners, you will supervise and steer joint projects aimed at advancing these algorithms on simulators and cutting-edge hardware platforms.

For the Principal role, you will possess established connections with other quantum computing experts and a knack for collaborating within academic circles.

Opportunities for travel may arise for cooperative ventures and conference attendance. Engaging with application teams on various fronts like nuclear and electron physics, material properties, fluid dynamics, etc., you will discern needs and facilitate future algorithm adoptions.

You will be accountable for evaluating the adoption of new quantum algorithms using pertinent methodologies to determine quantum advantage. Through collaboration with the Quantum Technology (QT) teams, you will advocate and elucidate the advantages of new QC to our application teams, leading their incorporation.

Engagement in the extensive UK QT program involves multiple stakeholders across academia, industry, and laboratories. As part of this role, you will be expected to work closely with numerous key stakeholders and oversee one of these relationships over time.

Requirements:

We are searching for candidates with:

  • A PhD in a scientific or STEM discipline, or equivalent experience
  • For the Principal position, substantial leadership background

This role calls for individuals who demonstrate proficiency in areas such as materials modeling, nuclear or electron shell modeling, optimal algorithms, analytical and numerical model utilization, and stakeholder management.

Moreover, specialist knowledge in quantum mechanics, quantum computing, quantum information theory, and quantum simulator applications is highly desirable.

For the Principal role, showcasing experience in leading larger teams, national and international technical expertise, and relationships with various stakeholders is essential.

What We Offer:

  • Extensive benefits including ample annual leave, 9-day working fortnight, and flexible working hours
  • Support for professional development, mentoring, and access to training
  • Employee assistance programs, occupational health services, and a competitive pension scheme
  • Various discounts, special leave policies, and inclusive workplace culture initiatives

Essential Information:

  • Applicants must be UK citizens residing in the UK for the past 10 years
  • Interviews will be conducted over Microsoft Teams and will require a preparatory presentation
  • Candidates should be willing to obtain and uphold essential security clearances funded by AWE

In conclusion, if you are passionate about quantum computing, seek a significant role in pioneering projects, and thrive in collaborative settings, then this position at AWE could be your next big step
