The Faster Diagnostics Framework aims to deliver an earlier and faster diagnosis for patients referred with suspected cancer.

The Urology Department is looking for a nurse to work as a navigator within the Faster Diagnostics Service (FDS).

This is an exciting opportunity to establish a new role within the diagnostic team. You will be the named point of contact for people referred with suspected prostate cancer. After triage and assessment, you will help guide patients through the diagnostic pathway offering support and advice. You will have a key role liaising with healthcare professionals across primary and secondary care.

You will work independently but also within a supportive nurse practitioner team and with links to other FDS nurses within the Trust.

You will be the named point of contact for people referred with suspected prostate cancer. After triage and assessment, you will help guide patients through the diagnostic pathway offering support and advice. You will have a key role liaising with healthcare professionals across primary and secondary care.

You will work independently but also within a supportive nurse practitioner team and with links to other FDS nurses within the Trust.


The Trust comprises four hospitals - the John Radcliffe Hospital, Churchill Hospital and Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Headington and the Horton General Hospital in Banbury.

NHS England have developed a programme to establish Faster Diagnostic Centres
(FDCs) or services (FDSs) to promote earlier diagnosis of or to rule out cancer.
This role will work independently but under the guidance and supervision of the
Urology Senior Advanced Nurse Practitioner & the Faster Diagnostic Band 7 nurse ,
to enable and support patients who are on the Faster Diagnostic Service (FDS)
pathway. The role will provide specialist advice to professionals regarding individuals
presenting with symptoms that could be due to cancer. The role involves
communication with multiple healthcare professionals across primary and secondary
care.
The post holder has the responsibility to provide a professional, comprehensive, and
efficient service, which is effectively delivered to all patients in line with the FDS
guidance.
The navigator will be able to access resources and services which will help patients
to a more effective and speedy diagnosis of cancer or benign disease. This post will
also act as a named point of contact for those patients and will be an appropriate
support to help deal with complex patient issues.

  • Be an integral part of the FDS multidisciplinary team (MDT).
  • To be a named point of contact for patients referred to Faster Diagnostic
Service.

  • To collect survey information for patients referred to the FDS.
  • To provide guidance, supervision, support and participate in the training of
Students, and act as a mentor for newly qualified staff.

  • Support seamless care of patients with symptoms that could be due to
cancer.

  • Triage and Assess all FDS referrals and guide them to the appropriate
diagnostic service.

  • Support appropriate and timely investigation of patients.
  • Provide knowledge and advice for primary and secondary care regarding
pathways/protocols and appropriate onward referrals.

  • Develop key relationships with primary and secondary care services
(oncology, ED, acute medicine, radiology, endoscopy, and pathology to
ensure quality of care to the patients is maximised).
