Join our Enabling Functions team as a Buyer supporting our Living Places business unit and you'll be a big part of fascinating, complex, varied and meaningful work

This role is supporting multiple highways maintenance, SCAPE, and public realm contracts, so there is an expectation to travel to stakeholder depots, however, there is flexibility on base location.

What you'll be doing

The role will be primarily accountable for the management of the end-to-end procurement activities for the sourcing of subcontracts, materials, plant and equipment for various Living Places highways maintenance and public realm contracts. This is an operational, 'hands on', tactical role in a fast-paced environment, working closely with commercial and operational colleagues.

Activities will include preparation of RFQ's / ITT's, management and evaluation of returns, and making sourcing recommendations to award contracts. The individual will be required to manage specific supply chains within the Contract to monitor performance and drive continuous improvement to support Contract and Business Unit key objectives.

The role has a requirement to build upon existing supply chain capacity and expertise, develop relationships with new suppliers where appropriate and embed collaborative working both with the customer and the supply chain

This role needs a credible 'doer with the ability to influence to win hearts and minds, whilst focussing on exceeding service expectations by delivering an agile, value adding service, with a good understanding of customer requirements, functional knowledge and process efficiency.

Who we're looking for

The following qualities/experience are required:

  • Experience of Oracle R12 or other ERP systems and Jaggaer e-procurement platforms advantageous; however, training can be provided if applicant has no experience of these
  • An understanding of how to run end to end procurement projects from market research, through sourcing, to contract and supplier management
  • Results orientated with the ability to plan and deliver against bid / project milestones
  • Prior exposure to negotiating commercial deals and contractual terms and conditions
  • Analytical, numerically astute with well-developed problem-solving abilities
  • Aware of commercial and financial risks and how to manage them
  • Robust problem-solving skills, ability to use own initiative to identify areas of improvement and propose solutions
  • Able to apply effective attention to detail
  • Able to prioritise – with support – a challenging workload of competing priorities
  • Highly customer focused and desire to meet and exceeding customer expectations
  • Knowledge of the construction/civils market would be an advantage, but applicants from other sectors are also encouraged to apply if they have relevant experience in the procurement function
