Biomedical Laboratory Assistant (known as HHTO)**
Job Summary
The Protein Development and Production Unit (PDPU) performs a vital role within NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) and is known internationally as a centre for excellence.
PDPU was formed as part of the International Blood Group Reference Laboratory (IBGRL) in 1946 to centralise production of blood grouping reagents and provide a reference centre for the newly formed National Blood Service.
The modern IBGRL Research Products produced by PDPU since 1991 have, year on year, built up a satisfied worldwide customer base.
The PDPU is involved in a range of projects to develop and produce recombinant proteins and monoclonal antibodies. These reagents, some of which are CE marked, are used in diagnostic tests and for research. These reagents are supplied internally for use within NHSBT and externally to hospitals, academic institutions and commercial customers worldwide.
PDPU requires a Biomedical Laboratory Assistant
to support the department carrying out duties in laboratory maintenance, reagent preparation, data input, clerical support, stock control and cleaning.
You will also be on hand to deal with queries from customers or visitors and to assist PDPU research scientists and managers.
Main duties of the job
- You will be required to perform a range of routine and non routine tasks in the PDPU with the support of your supervisor and other team members.
- You will be required to carry out routine tasks on a regular basis.
- You will carry out routine reagent preparation and laboratory maintenace tasks daily, weekly and monthly within the laboratory.
- You will ensure lab consumables and reagent stocks are kept above critical minimum level and order items when necessary to assist smooth day to day running of the laboratory.
- You will assist research scientists and the SHTO as well as other members of staff as required, following appropriate training.
About You
Experience and Knowledge
- Experience of working in a pharmaceutical, manufacturing or laboratory environment would be an advantage
- Experience of working with Information Technology such as Microsoft Office
- Experience of working within a regulated working environment and/or to strict documented procedures would be an advantage
Qualifications and Training
- Minimum of GCSE grade C or above in English and Maths or equivalent qualification eg NVQ Level 2, BTEC level 2 would be desirable or willingness to study for a Level 2 qualification, where funding available
- Willingness to undertake further training and development as required
