Birmingham, Birmingham, United Kingdom Birmingham Newman University Full time

Birmingham Newman University are looking to appoint to a newly established role of Assurance and Compliance Lead within a new Risk, Resilience and Assurance Team within the University Secretary's Office. The new team will initially have a particular focus on supporting development of frameworks for assurance and compliance and governance oversight in relation to the University's international strategy (UKVI student route) together with its collaborative partnerships and franchise provision and, therefore, applicants will find expertise and experience in these areas particularly beneficial.

The postholder will facilitate collaboration across the University's professional services and faculties to identify and mitigate risks associated with key areas of statutory and regulatory compliance and provide effective and timely assurance reporting to the University Leadership Team as well as the governing bodies (Council and its committees). Initially, the postholder will be charged with establishing mechanisms to ensure Home Office/UKVI compliance (student route), working with our partner who will be delivering recruitment, admissions processing and conversion; as well as supporting oversight and enhancement of the University's Franchise compliance and assurance framework.

This is a perfect opportunity for an experienced higher education administrator, with particular knowledge in relation to UKVI compliance, to further develop their leadership and management skills and be supported in growing understanding and related expertise across key professional service areas. The post holder will work closely with the Associate Director (Risk, Resilience and Assurance) and colleagues across the University as well as with our partners, facilitating collaboration and continuous improvement.

The successful candidate should have:

  • A desire to excel in their career in higher education and deploy and develop their skills and expertise within an ambitious institution pursuing substantive growth.
  • Understanding of formal governance, risk management and assurance structures in HE together with the ability to horizon scan and keep updated on key areas of statutory and regulatory compliance facing HEIs (including but not exclusively from the Office for Students Conditions).
  • Experience of working in UKVI Compliance and devising and delivering systems, processes, and policies to improve the effectiveness of related structures and practices in line with the relevant law, regulations and sector specific codes.
  • Knowledge of UKVI regulations and requirements in relation to the student route and experience of using the UKVI sponsor management system (SMS) and willingness to enhance at pace expertise in this regard.
  • Effective change and project management skills and ability to articulate clear examples of where these have been successfully utilised across an institution or a large department.
  • A track record of leading the successful development and implementation of organisation wide policies and procedures.
  • Adaptive and effective communication and influencing skills across a range of modes and media.
  • A technology focused approach to working – working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Teams, Sharepoint) and ability to deploy innovative ways of utilising IT and software solutions.
  • The ability to facilitate cross-functional, supportive and inclusive team working as well as self-motivate to achieve one's own objectives within a fast-paced and changing environment.
  • Flexibility, pro-activity, creativity and resilience.
