Consultant Colorectal Surgery

This is a new post for a Consultant Colorectal surgeon.

This new post has been created to cope with the expanding workload within the service line which includes robotic surgery, IBD provision, Pelvic Floor and advanced pelvic oncology.

The post-holder will work within the Service Line alongside the ten existing colorectal Surgeons.

In addition to activity on the main Derriford site, colorectal deliver activity at several satellite facilities including operation at Tavistock hospital.


The unit works an annualised job plan whereby all direct clinical care (DCC) commitments in theatre, endoscopy and clinics are allocated on a rolling basis by mutual agreement.

The job plan includes a fixed commitment to attend MDT meetings. All other commitments are worked flexibly to fulfil individual job plans.


The post is advertised for a 10 PA contract as per the new consultant contract, but it is understood that individuals may wish to negotiate for additional sessions after appointment.

Duties of the Post


The flexible job plan facilitates optimum usage of the facilities equally by all consultants and shares out all emergency and elective sessions equally.


There is a nominated consultant who is responsible for looking after all the non-take patients on the ward each week in rotation.

The applicant would be expected to contribute to this.


The successful applicant will be undertaking outpatient clinics and MDTs at least once a week and providing cover to colleague's clinics and MDTs during periods of absence.

The successful applicant will be allocated operating sessions with their consultant colleagues.


The successful applicant will, as part of their duties, be required to attend the cancer MDT meeting held in Plymouth.

The post holder will be expected to contribute towards the directorate's teaching and audit responsibilities. Attendance at regular CME and morbidity/mortality meetings is considered essential.

The post holder must participate in CPD activities to meet the requirements of revalidation.

Workload

This is an 10 PA post. Flexibility in association with service needs will be required within an annualised framework. The appointee will be expected to support clinical colleagues in offering a comprehensive colorectal service. The job plan may be altered in the future in consultation with colleagues, clinical director, and medical director. There will be an option to increase up to 12Pas.

On-call commitment

On call commitment will be 1:10
