Shrewsbury, Shropshire, United Kingdom Shropshire Wildlife Trust Full time

Chair of Trustees at Shropshire Wildlife Trust (SWT)

Location: Shropshire (Shrewsbury office) - Hybrid

Part-time Role: 2-3 days per month on average

About the Company: Shropshire Wildlife Trust (SWT) envisions a thriving natural world, where Shropshire's wildlife and habitats contribute to addressing environmental challenges, and people are motivated to take action for nature.

We are at an exciting phase in the Trust's growth. In 2022, we introduced a new theory of change and impact measurement framework outlining how we will execute The Wildlife Trusts' 2030 strategy in Shropshire. Building on our solid reputation and extensive experience, we are developing ambitious programs to achieve strategic objectives in Shropshire, in collaboration with other Trusts in the Severn basin and the Wilder Marches.

We are seeking a proactive and inclusive Chair who can balance personal humility with a strong drive to accomplish the Trust's strategic goals and support ongoing organizational growth. This role is challenging yet fulfilling, suited for someone adept at navigating complex relationships and communicating effectively at all levels.

Experience in conservation is not mandatory. More critical is a grasp of governance and the charity sector, the ability to view the big picture strategically, lead transformation, and tap into the skills of proficient board members.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the trustee board in fulfilling governance responsibilities
  • Ensure organizational compliance with regulations and manage activities
  • Collaborate with the Chief Executive to achieve strategic goals
  • Oversee the appropriate management of the CEO
  • Strengthen relationships between the board, staff, and volunteers
  • Engage with other Trusts and attend relevant events and meetings

Requirements:

  • Experience as a Chair
  • An effective team player and attentive listener
  • Skilled at leading, motivating, and empowering others
  • Build trusting and diplomatic relationships
  • Independent thinker with sound judgement
  • Ability to develop strategy and drive change
  • Lead with a visionary and strategic approach
  • Basic understanding of legal duties and financial acumen

Prior experience in a nonprofit or public sector organization is beneficial but not essential. The role demands a time commitment of 2-3 days per month on average, with occasional office presence.

This voluntary position does not offer remuneration, but expenses are covered. We are dedicated to fostering an inclusive workforce and encourage applications from diverse candidates. No agency inquiries or additional advertising requests will be considered.
