SUMMARY:
Serves as the supervisor for a given shift in the Patrol Division or as assigned within the Sheriff's office. Assigns, sets expectations, and oversees the work of and evaluates the performance of employees assigned to the shift.


The employee is required to be on duty before, during, and after natural disasters and emergencies, as directed by the supervisor.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
include the following.

Performs the duties of the watch commander in the absence of the Lieutenant. Responsible for the scheduling of shift personnel, beat assignments and briefing.

Provides assistance, information and recommendations to beat officers in performance of their duties.

Trains Patrol Officers.

Responsible for the care, assignment, and operation of departmental equipment utilized by shift personnel.


Maintains adequate knowledge of the Texas Penal Code, Texas Family Code, Texas Transportation Code, Laws, Texas Health and Safety Code, Texas Code of Criminal Procedure and any related issues involving law enforcement to provide the necessary supervision of shift personnel.


Responsible for overseeing of all patrolling activities in the unincorporated areas of Nueces County, to include all highways, streets, roads, beaches, waterways or any off-road areas.

Responsible for patrolling other areas of Nueces County when directed.


Responds to criminal offenses occurring within view, taking the required actions prescribed by departmental policy, the Texas Penal Code, Texas Transportation Code, the Texas Health and Safety Code, Nueces County Ordinances and any applicable statute on the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure.

Responds to radio dispatched assignments, to include; citizen requests for information or assistance, criminal offenses in progress, reported criminal offenses, death scenes, motor vehicle, aircraft, train vessel or industrial accident scenes, fires, explosions, natural disasters or any other situations requiring emergency or law enforcement action and taking the required action prescribed by departmental policy, law, statute, ordinance or as directed by departmental supervisory personnel.

Provides assistance to inter-departmental divisions and other law enforcement agencies as required.


Responsible for the care and control of crime, death or accident scenes until relieved of duties by supervisory or investigative personnel.

Responsible for the collection and preservation of evidence when time factors, weather conditions or other circumstances warrant immediate action. Maintains the chain of custody.

Carries out crime scene processing including lifting latent fingerprints, basic crime scene photography and crime scene accident sketching.

Composes detailed offense, supplementary, DWI and accident reports.

Communicates effectively with witnesses and victims under stressful situations.


Conducts interrogations of suspects when necessary or as directed by supervisory personnel providing all suspects with the required statutory constitutional warnings.

Maintains knowledge of and conforms to the laws of arrest as prescribed by the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure.

Testifies effectively in criminal court proceedings.

Ensures the confidentiality of all investigations and departmental matters.

Performs such other duties as may be assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:


Associates Degree in Criminal Justice or a related field plus two years of experience in law enforcement; or High School Diploma or GED plus four years of experience in law enforcement; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.


LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions and percentages.

REASONING ABILITY:


Ability to solve practical problems, multi-task, and/or deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
