Job Summary

Avantor is looking for a Service Lead to join our leadership team of Laboratory Support Services. This role is a full-time, permanent position based at one of our major customer's sites in Cambridge.


Currently we are transitioning our services from multiple sites across Cambridge to Discovery Centre (Bio-Medical Campus at the Addenbrookes site).

Your main location will be Granta Park to start with, but in February 2025 you also will move to DISC.

Sometimes you might be asked to attend another site in Cambridge (Darwin or Hodgkin), so you will need driving license to be able to commute easily from one site to another.


Laboratory Support Service Lead is perfect for someone, who already have experience of managing people, wants to step back from operational role and build on experience in an industry leading business.

The team


You will be managing a team of 12-17 Laboratory Technicians, who are currently supporting multiple laboratories on-site (biochemistry, life-sciences, cell culture).

Your role will be to conduct 1-2-1's and performance meetings, plan their training and progression, handle holidays and absences.

What we're looking for?

  • Education: Sciencerelated degree is preferable but nor crucial
  • Experience:
  • Line managing large teams in science, laboratory setting; strong people and interpersonal skills to lead and mentor the team effectively
  • Degree is not crucial, however you need understanding of various types of laboratories and general science knowledge, to understand science business needs and actively participate in meetings with customer
  • Leading a team through a business change/modernization/business transition will be preferred
  • Knowledge and experience of lean six sigma processes
  • SOP, risk assessment & COSHH documentation and management experience
  • Experience of working to ISO standards and/or GxP and auditing and development of Quality procedures

  • Management and delivery of Laboratory Technician Support Service mentoring, development and engagement; ensuring service continuity across the Cambridge footprint
  • Ability to build & implement robust documentation and Quality procedures including, project plans and timelines, COSHH, work instructions, SOP's and risk assessments
  • Engage with Avantor Services Leadership Team to enable delivery of Scientific Services on schedule and aligned to customer expectation and satisfaction
  • Planning, mobilization and smooth transition of services and Avantor Associates into the new R&D facility
  • Managing key partners expectations, communicating requirements and attending meetings with the customer to report on progress and provide information on the facility
